She knew he’d appreciate something sexual, but she had no idea what his schedule looked like.

An idea came to her, and she knew exactly what she was going to do.

Chapter Forty

Liam

Kathy poked her head in his office. “I’m going to lunch. Don’t forget you’ve got the Women’s League luncheon.”

He let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I know.”

“Don’t be late. You know how Vicki values punctuality.”

He stood and unrolled his sleeves and buttoned the cuffs. “I know, I know,” then slid his suit jacket on.

Vicki Kaiser was one of his biggest supporters on the hospital board, so he didn’t want to get on her bad side. She was also on the board of the Women’s League and had asked him to come to their monthly luncheon to give an update on upcoming events at the hospital.

Even without Vicki’s association, he would have been happy to accept the invitation. He understood the importance of maintaining good community relationships and luncheons and dinners with organizations were a regular part of his job.

Unfortunately, it seemed like whenever he attended groups comprised mostly of women, without fail, at least one or two of the members had a daughter, sister, or niece that he just had to meet. Or there was the occasional freshly divorced woman who made her new single status obvious.

Liam has been good at leaving those luncheons without hard feelings at not being interested, always citing with a laugh that his career didn’t leave any time for dating. The fact there actually was a woman in his life now probably wouldn’t go over very well with some of the ones he’d turned down in the past, so he’d continue using his job as his excuse when he was approached, which he knew was inevitable.

Like clockwork, after he spoke and sat down at his table, ladies started coming up to him to ask questions about the hospital, thank him for coming, and a few asked if he was married.

“I’m married to my job,” he said with a laugh.

One petite Asian woman who was visibly pregnant said, “So’s my sister! You two would be perfect together. I’d love for you to meet her.”

Vicki intervened on his behalf, “Naomi, you know Rachel is going to want to follow in your footsteps and start a family soon. Liam is not the guy for that.”

He gave Naomi a polite smile and said, “She’s right,” but the thought him right in the solar plexus.

I’m biologically capable of having children, he reminded himself. Maybe I could be the guy for that.

But I’d be a shitty dad who worked all the time.

Liam gave himself an internal shake. Didn’t he just have this conversation with Parker where he’d touted to his friend the benefits of being a dad with means?

Why couldn’t that apply to him, too?

Because I barely make it home to feed my dog at an acceptable time at night.

You’d have Utah there, the devil—or angel, he hadn’t figured out yet which one was rooting for them—on his shoulder reminded him.

I’m getting way ahead of myself. She’s just with me to stay out of jail. Come January, she’ll be gone.

The problem with being a community figure was he had to mask his grouchy mood, or it’d be all over social media about what a prick Boston General’s CEO is.

So, he smiled and made small talk for the next thirty minutes until he could make his exit.

He’d received several texts and two calls that he ignored during the luncheon, so he checked his phone before starting his car.

Everything could wait except for the text from Kathy.

Kathy: Don’t forget your meeting with Rick Oseran and Tom Larsen at 2p. I’ve emailed you the files you requested.

How could I forget?
