“Hi. Come in. Close the door.”

She stepped inside and immediately shut it behind her, then walked to his desk and took one of the visitor chairs opposite him.

“So, you’re heading out…”

She nodded. “I’m meeting Amy at Lillian’s dress shop.”

He looked at his monitor and absent-mindedly murmured, “Good, good,” before hitting a few buttons on his keyboard.

“You, um, wanted to give me back something, Sir?”

“Right.” With his eyes still looking at his computer monitor, he reached inside the desk drawer where she’d left her panties and pulled them out in his closed fist. He barely spared her a glance when he held out his hand to drop them into hers.

“Here you go.”

“Thanks. This will make trying on clothes a lot more comfortable.”

Finally, he tore his gaze away to look at her. His polite smile did not reach his eyes, and that bothered her.

“I really am sorry about this morning.”

“I know.”

He didn’t offer anything else, and Utah sat there awkwardly, unsure what to say next.

Had he already lost interest in her?

Hell, even Eric had hung around for three months after he’d convinced her to run away with him. She thought for sure Liam would last at least as long—which is why she’d had Brad counter with four months.

She slapped her thighs before standing. “Okay. I’m going to go. I’ll see you tonight?”

He didn’t stand to walk her to the door, and instead went back to looking at his computer, murmuring, “Don’t wait up. I’m going to be late.”

“Okay. Have a nice night.”

“You too, baby. Have fun.”

How pathetic was she that simply him calling her baby made her feel so much better?

“There’s got to be something else going on. He wouldn’t be that mad just because you forgot to call him this morning,” Amy said as she went through a rack of dresses at Lillian’s.

“I mean, you don’t think he’s already lost interest?” Utah asked as she pulled a mint-green dress and held it up to her chest.

“No, that doesn’t make any sense. Why would he?” her friend said then continued, “Oh, I like that one.”

Utah draped the gown over arm while she kept looking.

“I don’t know, because he’s a guy and guy’s get bored easily? It’s not exactly like I’m a challenge.”

“Yeah, but I don’t think that’s what he wants, do you? I mean…” Amy looked around and lowered her voice. “He collared you. He wants you to be submissive, not a challenge.”

“Maybe I suck at being a submissive then.”

The corner of Amy’s mouth turned up. “Well, you definitely suck… but I think that’s probably one of the things he likes about you.”

“Ha ha.”
