“’Kay.”

He kissed her hair again, lost in thought as he dozed off about how glad he was to have her next to him.

Utah

The next morning, she found herself oddly disappointed there wasn’t a note waiting for her on the island counter when she went down to the kitchen.

She’d felt him get out of bed, but as usual, he’d been so quiet that she managed to stay asleep until her alarm went off at six-thirty.

They hadn’t really spent any time together since Tuesday night. She missed him. Maybe they could have lunch today—in his office.

Once she was in her car, she sent him a text.

Utah: Good morning! I’m sorry I was already asleep when you got home last night.

He replied before she even started the car.

Liam: I’m sorry if I woke you. It was a late night.

Utah: Hopefully you’ll be home earlier tonight. I want to show you my dress!

Liam: I should be out of here by eight at the latest.

Utah: Are you available for lunch today? I miss you.

Liam: Sorry, little bee. I’m busy all day today.

Utah: Oh, okay. I’ll see you tonight.

She reread their exchange again and felt like crying.

He didn’t tell her he missed her back, nor did he say anything about wanting to see her dress.

Maybe Amy was right; maybe it was her cycle because she was way too upset about this. Or maybe her gut was trying to tell her something.

Chapter Forty-One

Utah

Her co-worker, Kyle, knocked on her open door. “We’re going to lunch if you want to go.”

The time in the corner of her monitor read 12:02.

“Wow, I didn’t realize it was noon already.” Liam had said he didn’t have time to have lunch with her, and she was hungry… It would behoove her to be friendly with her co-workers, so she said, “Thanks, I’d love to.”

Utah reached inside her desk for her wallet, only to remember she didn’t have any money, and her own credit card hadn’t arrived yet. The one of Liam’s that he’d given her, she’d left on his nightstand.

Maybe she had a few dollars in her wallet where she kept her change.

She fucking hated having to rely on him for an allowance like a child.

Unclasping the change purse, she looked down to see only coins and quickly snapped it closed.

With an embarrassed smile, she looked up at Kyle.

“You know what? I forgot to bring money today so I’m just going to grab something from the vending machine.”
