And fucking Kyle was fired. Actually, all three of those assholes were getting a pink slip.

“Don’t you think, Liam?”

Hearing his name brought his attention back to his lunch companion. “I’m sorry, Melissa, my mind was elsewhere there for a second. I’m working on a problem and trying to figure out what the best course of action is.”

“Would the problem happen to be at a table across the room?”

He cocked his head like he didn’t know what she meant.

“Why would you ask that?”

“You haven’t stopped staring at something—or someone—since we sat down.”

“It is a personnel issue, you’re right. I’m sorry I have not been a very good lunch date.”

Her lips twitched with amusement. “Oh, was this a date?”

Liam didn’t know if she was teasing or flirting with him, but he was careful not to give her the wrong impression.

“Of course. All my lunches in the cafeteria are professional dates.”

Apparently, he hadn’t been obvious enough, because she replied, “So, what happens when we have dinner in a restaurant? What will you call it then?”

Liam paused. The doctor certainly was beautiful, but even if he wasn’t currently involved with Utah, he never would have dated someone who worked at the hospital.

Oh, the irony of his situation.

His little convict came along and suddenly his rules didn’t apply anymore.

He shut the doctor down with a patient smile. “I’d call it a professional dinner, but my girlfriend prefers that I’m home in time to eat with her, so I try to avoid those.”

“Oh.” Her face went from flirtatious to flustered—almost embarrassed. “Ev—Everyone has said you’re single, I didn’t realize you were involved with someone.”

“I try to keep my personal life private.”

“I completely understand. I’m sorry. I guess my ego thought maybe you asked me to lunch to ask me out.”

Judging by the daggers being thrown his way from across the cafeteria, Melissa wasn’t the only one thinking that.

“It’s something new I’m implementing. I took our new IT consultant to lunch on Monday, the new nurse in our Ob/Gyn department on Tuesday, our new admitting clerk to dinner last night, and you to lunch today.”

“Well, don’t I feel silly.”

“Please don’t. There are plenty of men here who will be jumping at the chance to ask you out. Just do me a favor and do all your dating outside the hospital and off-duty.”

Evan Lacroix, another ER doc, was a pain in his ass with all his on-duty shenanigans with nurses and fellow doctors. How the man had avoided a write-up so far, Liam wasn’t sure.

He glanced over to see Utah stand with her tray, along with her tablemates from her department. Kyle took her tray from her, and her face lit up with appreciation as they walked toward the exit. She didn’t spare Liam another glance.

Her punishment was getting worse by the minute.

Melissa glanced at the smartwatch on her wrist and scooted her chair back.

“I should get back to work. Thank you for lunch. I enjoyed getting to know you better.” She cast a glance at where the IT crew had just left the cafeteria. “I hope you get your personnel problem figured out.”

He stood up, too.

“I have a few ideas how I’m going to handle it.”
