Every cell in her body screamed at her to agree with him, but she knew if she did, she’d never want to leave. Staying meant giving up the dream of being a mom. That thought was too difficult to bear.

“You know I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Have you changed your mind about having children?”

He hung his head. “No.”

“That’s why.”

It stung that he wasn’t willing to change his mind to keep her. But at the same time, she appreciated that he didn’t lie to her.

It still hurt like a bitch, though.

Things with Liam had changed. She still wore his collar, but knowing things were ending at the end of the month made their interactions bittersweet.

Every kind word or deed he did for her now felt like a punch to her heart. All the things she loved about him were going to be things she’d miss. Every. Single. Day.

Still, they managed to keep their routines. Their newest was drinking wine in front of the lit Christmas tree with all the other lights off.

Sitting in the dark with him while they talked was when she felt closest to him.

More than once, she’d considered asking him to change his mind about becoming a dad. He never thought he could have a dog, and yet he now had Phoebe. And he adored that pup.

Was it too far-fetched to think he could have the same change of heart about having kids?

But her pride wouldn’t let her.

She’d willingly begged for a lot of things as his submissive, but she wasn’t going to beg him to have a family with her.

He pulled into the garage but sat in his car for a minute before getting out.

Oh, how things had changed. The idea of Utah greeting him with a kiss and a drink while the smell of dinner filled the kitchen used to make him so damn happy. Now, it just felt like the Universe was mocking him by showing him what was going to be taken from him in exactly two weeks.

Although today’s board decision made it possible it could be sooner.

Happy Fucking Holidays.

With a sigh, he opened the car door and got out.

I’m going to enjoy my time with her while I still have it.

He walked into the kitchen and was met with the comforting smell of dinner cooking that he’d come to expect when he got home. The sight of her smiling at him as she set the table brought him a sense of peace, and when she stopped what she was doing, like she always did, to greet him with a kiss, he finally understood the expression, King of the Castle. She made him feel like a fucking king.

“What can I get you to drink, Sir?”

“Just a beer.”

Loosening his tie, he knelt to shower Phoebe with the affection she’d been patiently waiting for.

“Were you a good girl today?” he asked the pup as he headed toward the pantry with the dog treats.
