Kathy smirked. “You’re not. He’s having lunch with his fiancée.”

He cocked his head, wondering how she knew that.

With a shrug, she answered his unspoken question. “Helen told me. She really likes Alexandra.”

“So does Utah. They’ve become fast friends.”

“That must make it nice to go out with them.”

“It has been.”

Just one more thing he wouldn’t be doing in the new year.

“Knock knock,” Utah said with a smile as she stood in the doorway.

“I’ll go get you those drinks,” Kathy said with a wink as she turned to leave.

“Two Diet Cokes.”

She turned around and gave him a sassy, “I know,” before warmly welcoming Utah.

“What is it with all the sassy women in my life?” he grumbled.

“Oh, you love it,” Utah replied when she walked in and closed the door.

Liam slid his arm around her and planted a soft kiss on her lips.

“You’re right, I do. How’s your day been, baby?”

He guided her to the table where she sat down and opened the container in front of her.

“Oh, this looks great!” She took a bite and then answered his question. “It’s been busy. If it’s okay with you, I’m going to stay and help out until the thirtieth. Roger needs all the assistance he can get.”

Hearing her utter the word stay made his heart flutter, until he realized what she meant.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to. I mean, I know I don’t technically work here, but I kinda do. And for the most part, everyone in my department has been welcoming to me. I hate the idea of leaving them in a lurch.”

“The lurch isn’t going to be fixed by the thirtieth.”

“No, but it will be less of a shitshow for whoever Roger hires, hopefully soon.”

“I mean if you don’t mind staying… I’m sure Roger would appreciate the help.”

Her voice got quiet when she added, “I will need to leave early on Thursday though.”

His hackles instantly went up. He could tell by the tone in her voice he wasn’t going to like what she had to say.

“Oh? Why?”

“I have to sign my lease. They have holiday hours all next week, so they’ll only be dealing with emergencies then. If I want my keys by the twenty-ninth, I have to do the paperwork this week.”

He was right. He didn’t like it one bit.

Still, he’d been a dick about her moving into an apartment long enough.

“Okay. You’re working when you don’t have to be, so it’s not like anyone could complain.”
