But it was the man standing in front of the stove, frying the meat, that made her knees go weak. Especially when she thought back to all the things they’d done last night. His toothpaste-worthy smile once he saw her standing next to the kitchen island, made it feel like butterflies had taken flight in her stomach.

Oh, this was bad.

“Good morning, beautiful!”

“Good morning.” Her voice was still groggy from sleep, so she cleared her throat before asking, “Have you been up long?”

“A while. Phoebe and I went for a run this morning, and I got a quick workout in after that. How’d you sleep?”

She took a seat at one of the barstools at the island. “Like the dead. Your mattress is amazing.”

The corner of his mouth turned up. “It wasn’t the mattress that knocked you out, baby.”

His cocky wink as he moved the bacon from the pan onto a paper-toweled plate made her breath catch.

Utah believed in giving credit where credit was due.

“Yeah, you were pretty amazing.”

He pinned her with his stare. “So were you.”

She felt her skin flush from her chest up her neck.

What is up with that? I don’t blush!

But she felt the warmth in her cheeks, she had to concede that apparently, she did around this man.

He prepared a plate with bacon, eggs, and toast and slid it in front of her, graciously changing the subject so she could collect herself.

“So, what do you have planned for today?” he asked while opening a drawer and pulling out silverware.

Going to the library to do a background check on you.

“Thank you,” she murmured as she accepted the utensils but not before she took a nibble of bacon. “I’ve got a couple projects that I’m working on, but nothing pressing.”

Sitting down next to her with his own plate of food, he buttered his toast, as he asked, “Did you say you work from home?”

“Most of the time.” Utah didn’t want to talk about her hacking jobs, especially with the illegal one being so recent, so gestured to the breakfast in front of her to change the subject. “This is really good. I thought you said you didn’t cook?”

“I didn’t say I didn’t know how, it’s just not something I do a lot. Cooking for one isn’t that appealing.”

She took another bite of bacon and chewed thoughtfully. “I get that.”

They were quiet as they ate, as if they were both lost in their own thoughts. She’d never lived with anyone after she’d moved out of her dorm room. Being in a relationship had never felt important, but after Amy moved in with her boyfriend last year, Utah realized she was the last one of their group of friends who was alone.

The two of them finished eating at the same time and Utah cleared their plates. As she rinsed the dishes and put them in the dishwasher, he tried to appear nonchalant when he inquired, “So do you need to get home right away?”

Like she noticed yesterday, Liam was not a good actor. She wondered why he was asking.

“No. My schedule is pretty flexible. Why? Do you need me to do something?”

He rubbed a spot on his black granite counters, not looking at her when he asked, “Would you be interested in working for me?”

What? Working for him?

She shook her head. “I’m not taking any new clients right now. I meant, did you need something for Phoebe?”

“No, no, not for IT. I’m talking about Phoebe, too. Like a project manager here—at my house.”
