The angel on her other shoulder seemed to also be in agreement with the devil about Utah spending the week at his house.

And you have enjoyed your time with him.

That was the problem. She’d enjoyed it too much. She didn’t want to get used to it.

If she wasn’t careful, she was going to leave his house at the end of the week with a broken heart.

“You really didn’t have to drive me, you know. I could have picked up ice cream without it melting before I got back to your house. People buy ice cream at the grocery store all the time.”

“I know, but I want a Waffle Sundae, and we can get a Cow Paws for Phoebe.”

The cocker spaniel, who was sitting comfortably on Utah’s lap, lifted her ears at the sound of her name.

Utah laughed as she rubbed the pup’s neck.

“You’re spoiling her.”

“And I don’t feel bad about it.”

That only made her adore him more.

She directed him to her designated parking spot, then undid her seatbelt and put her hand on the passenger door.

“I’ll hurry.”

Liam opened the driver’s side door. “Nonsense. We’ll come with you and help.”

She glanced nervously around the well-lit parking lot. Normally, she appreciated that safety feature, but tonight she resented it. She wanted to be able to hide in the shadows.

“Okay, but we need to sneak Phoebe in. My complex has a strict no pets policy.”

“Oh,” his face fell. “I can wait in the car with her then.”

Utah suspected he wanted to see what her apartment looked like. While it wasn’t anything fancy, she’d made it homey and welcoming, and she wanted him to see that side of her.

“No, it’s fine. I snuck her in here Saturday night. We just need to be careful.”

“I might have a gym towel in my trunk we can wrap her in. Let me check.”

She waited in the car while Liam checked out the contents of his trunk. He must not have had much in it, because it took him just a few seconds before he closed it and came around to the passenger door.

“I think I took it out and put it in the laundry hamper,” he lamented. “I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay. If you hold her and walk closely behind me, it should be all right.”

She moved to get out, then sat back in her seat when the lights of a white BMW a few spaces over flashed. Liam moved his body to block her and the dog from view of the couple getting into the car. Once they pulled away, she handed Phoebe to him, and she got out of the Mercedes.

Utah pulled her keys from her purse as they power walked to her apartment, and she made quick work of unlocking the door and ushering them inside.

Once she’d shut and locked the door behind her, Liam put Phoebe down while he looked around her apartment.

The space was less than eight hundred square feet, so she always made sure to keep it clean, since any clutter made it feel exponentially smaller.

“Your place is nice. It suits you.”

“Thanks. Make yourself at home; I’ll just be a minute.”

But instead of taking a seat at the kitchen table or living room couch, he and Phoebe followed her into her bedroom.
