“What do you mean, why?”

“Why can’t you stay? You work from home, right? I didn’t see a desktop computer at your place, which means you use a laptop. A laptop is portable, so there’s no reason you couldn’t work from my house.”

She gnawed on her bottom lip as she tried to come up with an argument. All she could come up with was, “I think you’re probably going to be ready for me to go back to my apartment by the end of the week.”

With raised eyebrows, Liam pinned her in place with his stare. “Wanna bet?”

They kept talking all the way back to his place. His little honeybee was not only smokin’ hot and sexy as fuck, but she was smart as a whip and had been kind to the server who’d brought their ice cream.

That had been important. He thought he’d had a connection with the last chick he’d gone out with, until he took her out to dinner, and she’d acted like a total diva with the waitstaff and anyone she deemed “lower” than her.

That was a big nope for him. Liam didn’t take her out again.

He’d slowly been revealing his kinky side to Utah, and so far, she hadn’t run for the hills. On the contrary, he’d noticed how her pupils had dilated and nipples had gone stiff when he’d casually mentioned some of the things he wanted to do to her.

It dawned on him that she might be the one he’d been looking for. But he quickly dismissed it. Obviously, it was too early to be thinking like that.

But her long legs in his passenger seat called out to him like a siren’s song.

He couldn’t wait to get her home and do a few of those things he’d suggested.

Utah

It was cute how much Phoebe already loved Liam. She stared adoringly at him on the car ride back to his house, then followed him into his office and sat under his feet while he took care of a work emergency.

He’d gotten a text just as they were pulling into the garage, and after scanning it, turned to her with his mouth downturned. “It’s an urgent message from work. I’m sorry I have to deal with this.”

“Do you have to go into the office?”

“No, I can handle it from here, but it’s going to need my full attention.” He reiterated, “I’m sorry. I don’t know how long I’ll be.”

Putting her hand on his forearm, she asked, “Is there anything I can do?”

He entwined his fingers through hers, then lifted their hands and kissed her knuckles. “Just be patient with me.”

“Take as long as you need. I’m going to read my book.”

Utah sat in bed wearing a black-lace teddy—the only piece of lingerie she owned, she’d packed—and reading RJ Gray’s newest military romance, the next book on her TBR list. It was comforting to know he was in the next room, but when she got to the sexy parts of the story, she willed him to hurry and finish his work so he could admire the lingerie she’d worn for him.

And maybe make good on the things he said he was going to do to her.

The next thing she knew, she woke up to find her Kindle on her face and the space next to her still empty. The clock on the bedside table read 12:34.

She set the reading device on the nightstand next to her and debated about going to look for Liam. She decided not to bother him, and switched off the lamp, then pulled the covers around her and fell asleep.

The nightstand clock read 1:36 when she felt his arm band her waist and his warm body spoon hers.

“Hey,” she said softly.

“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to wake you,” he whispered in her ear. “Go back to sleep.”

“It’s okay,” she mumbled, then turned over to nestle closer to him.
