However, as she looked at the kid in front of her and noticed he had fucking acne on his cheek, she was suddenly regretting that decision.

The young man held out his hand. “Ms. Douglas, I’m Brad Osborne, your public defender.”

“Hello, Brad. Thanks for coming.”

She sat in the chair opposite him and bit down on the side of her cheek to keep from asking how long ago he’d passed the bar.

He opened his briefcase and pulled out a manilla folder with her name on it. His brows wrinkled as he shuffled through the paperwork inside.

“It looks like the attorney general’s office is also going to bring charges against Pam and Warren Kazmer for harboring a fugitive.”

“What?”

Pam and Warren were Amy’s parents.

He looked up from the page he’d been studying.

“You’ve been staying in their cottage, correct?”

“Yes, but they were hardly harboring me. I was evicted from my apartment recently, and they were helping out their daughter’s friend. This is a bullshit charge, and you know it, Brad.”

He shuffled the page to the back, then tapped the bottom of the stack against the table to straighten the papers.

“We’ll let the Kazmers worry about that. Right now, let’s talk about the government’s case against you.”

While she had no doubt that Amy’s parents would be exonerated, she knew defending themselves would come at an expense. The idea that their generosity could cost them made her want to vomit. And she didn’t appreciate Brad’s cavalier attitude about it.

She folded her arms defensively in front of her.

“Okay, let’s talk about the government’s case.”

“Well, looking at their evidence… I have to tell you, Ms. Douglas, it doesn’t look good.”

She unfolded her arms and leaned her elbows on the table. It was the first promising thing she’d heard in a while. “That’s good news, right?”

“No, I meant it doesn’t look good for you.”

Fuck.

Utah blew out a breath as she slumped back against her chair.

“Okay. What are my options?”

He shuffled more papers, like it was the first time seeing her file.

“Well, it appears the prosecutor is willing to offer you a plea deal.”

As long as the Kazmers were left the fuck alone, and she didn’t have to do too much jailtime, she’d take it.

“What are they offering?”

He flipped through more pages.

“It looks like the hospital wants restitution, and…”

Utah started laughing. She’d be done with any prison sentence she got long before she’d ever come close to paying the hospital back.

“What are my other options?”
