As did his hand on her thigh the entire ride to the restaurant.

Liam

He couldn’t be in love already. It was too soon.

Right?

He enjoyed the view as he walked behind her when the hostess showed them to their outside table. More than a few men on the patio did a double take as they walked by, some more subtly than others. Liam could say with one hundred percent certainty they weren’t looking at him or their dog.

And he could hardly fault them. She was stunning, and she didn’t even realize it.

Or if she did, she did a good job pretending she didn’t.

The funny thing was he didn’t feel an ounce of jealousy when he noticed the guys staring. That collar around her neck meant she was his, and they were admiring what belonged to him.

Not to mention a court order meant she wasn’t going anywhere.

They had a nice brunch, with plenty of people stopping to ask if they could pet Phoebe. Of course, the cocker spaniel loved the attention.

“You won the doggie lottery, Phoebs,” Utah told her once the server left after bringing over dog treats and a water bowl.

“She really did. When you stop and think about all the things that had to line up for her to come live with me. Had one thing not aligned, it never would have happened.”

“Like what? What was the first piece?”

Liam thought about it for a moment. “Well, if your sister hadn’t been there—in that dress—taking Phoebe around, I never would have considered adopting her.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “What does my sister’s dress have to do with anything?”

“Well, frankly, she looked hot, so I decided to try and get her number.” He winked as he took a drink of his coffee. “Then I won the lottery when instead, she gave you mine.”

“I didn’t know that part of the story. Dakota just said she felt like we would hit it off and insisted I meet you.”

“Well, in the interest of full disclosure, there isn’t much to that part of the story. She shut me down before I even said more than two words to her. But she did say she had a sister who was single who she could arrange for me to meet if I were willing to adopt Phoebe. I told her I’d think about it, honestly never expecting to hear from you. But you called me the next day—piece number two.”

“What’s the next part?”

“How fucking beautiful you were when I opened my front door. There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t have done to impress you.”

Her mouth turned up. “So, you adopted Phoebe…”

He nodded. “I adopted Phoebe.”

“Any regrets?”

“Not a single, solitary, one, honeybee.”

She considered him for a beat then blurted out, “You’re very easy to like, you know that?”

He furrowed his brows at her odd compliment. “That’s a good thing, right?”

“Yeah.” Then he heard her say under her breath, “Too good.”

“Well, hopefully that will make living with me for the next four months more tolerable.”

“Hopefully.” She gave him a wicked grin. “Because I’m sure being your sex toy is going to be torture.”
