Utah gave the man a polite smile. “Thank you. That’s very kind of you to offer.”

Aiden was a good guy. Grumpy as fuck lately, but a good guy. Liam appreciated that he was trying to be helpful.

Liam slipped his hand to the small of Utah’s back. “Aiden is the best cardiologist in New England, if not the country. We’re lucky to have him at Boston General.”

Utah’s eyes widened. “Wow. That’s impressive. I’m flattered you’d even suggest I could bother you.”

“You wouldn’t be bothering me.” The cardiologist glanced at Liam as if to make sure he wasn’t stepping on his boss’s toes, and quickly added, “But I’m sure Liam will make certain you’re taken care of.”

Aiden’s daughters appeared to be unimpressed with their father’s credentials because the youngest whined, “Come on, Dad! You promised we’d get ice cream before you dropped us off!”

“And that’s my cue,” Aiden said with a smile. “Have a nice hike.”

With that, he and the girls got into a white Audi A8, and Liam, Utah, and Phoebe walked toward a trailhead at the end of the parking lot.

Phoebe was in heaven as she sniffed every bush, rock, and tree while they hiked along the path.

Utah said quietly, “I’m sorry—I didn’t realize he works at Boston General. I never would have said you bought me the necklace if I’d known that.”

“It’s fine. I think I can trust Aiden to be discreet.”

“You’re obviously a big deal,” she teased. “I’m sure he wouldn’t offer to help out just anyone.”

He chuckled. “I think he’s far more interested in impressing your sister than me.”

“He knows Dakota?”

“Apparently, they dated, but they aren’t seeing each other now. Although I got the impression that wasn’t his choice.”

“Interesting… I had no idea she was even seeing anyone. I don’t think I’ve ever known her to date—not since she got pregnant in high school.”

“Well, you can pass along that Dr. Matthews is definitely interested. I suspect he’ll find a way to run into you at the hospital and bring your sister into the conversation.”

“Speaking of the hospital, how are things going to work? You said I’d ride with you, but are we going to walk in together?”

Her question was adorable. “Yes, we’re going to walk in together.”

“Who all knows that I’m court ordered to be there?”

“No one.”

Her eyebrows rose to her hairline. “No one? Not even HR?”

“No. Everyone thinks you’re a consultant being paid by an outside firm. They just don’t know the outside firm is the State of Massachusetts Court System, and your payment is staying out of prison. The only people who know are the board.”

“Won’t us arriving and leaving together stir up gossip? Will people be upset that the CEO’s girlfriend is now working there?”

His steps faltered, and he turned to look at her.

“Girlfriend? You’re my girlfriend?”

He immediately knew that was the wrong thing to say by the blush creeping up her chest, and the way she stammered out, “I—uh, I mean, no. I guess not.” And the way her voice changed from embarrassed to snarky when she said, “Dominant’s temporary submissive just seems a little wordy.”

“Watch your tone, little bee,” he warned.

She let out a long sigh, but softly said, “I’m sorry, Sir. But how else would you describe our dynamic?”

“I certainly don’t need to explain our dynamic or anything else about our relationship to anyone.”
