Kyle nervously asked, “Um, do you need something, sir?”

“No, I just came to take Utah to lunch.” Liam made a point of looking at New Guy when he continued, “But I should apologize for not getting down here sooner to meet…?”

“Leo Thornton,” the man supplied, offering his hand.

“Nice to meet you, Leo. Liam McDonnell.”

There was no sign of recognition from New Guy at Liam’s name, which made Liam realize he was long overdue for department visits.

The onus was on him.

But the dude still needed an office-etiquette refresher course. Before Liam became the CEO, he’d found that IT guys were a lot like the cardiothoracic doctors—they thought they were gods.

Well, these “gods” let his honeybee do some serious damage to Boston General’s accounts receivable, so right now, they better be walking around with their heads down, at least around him.

Not a lot of the other staff knew about the hack. The board, Liam, and the executive management team decided to keep it as discreet as possible. Not only did they not want the publicity, and embarrassment, they didn’t want to advertise they were vulnerable.

IT sent out a “your data was breached, here’s a year’s worth of credit monitoring on us” letter to patients, but other than that, they kept quiet about it.

Liam looked around the bullpen of cubicles., then back at Kyle. “Can you tell me where to find Utah Douglas? She’s expecting me.”

“Oh, she’s in one of the offices. I’ll show you.”

“Just point me in the right direction, I’ll find it.”

It was funny to see the oh shit! look on so many faces as he passed through the office.

Yeah, he was definitely overdue for department visits.

The third office from the end was where he found his little bee. It looked like she’d just applied fresh lipstick, because her lips were redder and glossier than when he’d left her in HR that morning, and her hair looked shiny as it cascaded around her shoulders, like maybe she’d just run a brush through it.

“Hey,” he said as he leaned against her open door with his hands in his pockets.

“Hi there.”

Her warm smile when she saw him inflated his ego, and he pushed off the door to walk further into her office, not bothering to close the door when he kissed her cheek.

“How’s everything going?”

“Great. I was able to get right to work.”

He glanced around her sad office, and she let out a laugh at what must have been his expression.

“Good thing I’ll be working remotely a few days a week soon.”

He already disliked that idea. Taking her to lunch had been the highlight of his day.

“Yeah, but that won’t be for a while, right? We’ll get some new furniture in here STAT, and we can go shopping this weekend for anything else you need.”

“I don’t know if I can wait until the weekend to get a new chair. This one is awful.”

“You’re not buying your own chair, honeybee. I’ll get a new one sent to you this afternoon.”

“As much as I love the perks of sleeping with the boss, I don’t want my coworkers to think I’m getting preferential treatment.”

He shoved his hands back in his pockets to keep from wrapping his arms around her.

“You are getting preferential treatment.”
