My second orgasm was much faster, though I couldn’t have said if my first one had ever truly ended.

I whined, writhed, and moaned as I came on his cock, feeling as his movements grew sloppy and his breathing turned uneven.

I stilled as Tor pressed himself to the deepest part inside of me and held himself there. His cock jerked inside of me as Tor came. He leaned forward, pressing his chest against my back as I lay curled over the sink.

“Maeve…” Tor whispered, pressing his cheek between my shoulders. His long, dark hair tickled the exposed skin at the back of my neck. “Past the bonds, and markings and gods. I truly think I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love you.” He whispered.

I blushed, closing my eyes as I absorbed the statement, unable to find the words to return the favor.

A knock on the door woke me from my dreamless sleep, and I would have rolled out of bed if Rainn didn’t catch me before I hit the floor.

The faelights bobbed, hovering dimly between the wall and the ceiling, growing bolder as Rainn sprung up and raced for the door, his eyes half open as sleep clung to him.

Tor grabbed the nearest blanket and wrapped it around my shoulders, and I hadn’t thought of my nakedness until that moment. I stood up, holding the blanket tightly, feeling its warmth under my fingers. Rainn’s coat, which followed me wherever I went.

It took a moment to find a dress and pull it over my head, but even then, I couldn’t bring myself to tuck away Rainn’s coat. I kept it over my shoulders like a cape as I padded to the door to see who had come to wake us.

Rainn spoke in a low voice, unwilling to open the door all of the way. He shot me an apologetic glance.

“Who is it?” I asked, frowning.

“My mother.” Rainn opened the door to reveal the Selkie Queen's wide, beautiful eyes and the dozen guards filling the hallway. “She wants to go for a walk.”

“Okay?” I elongated the word. “Tor and I will be fine if you’re needed elsewhere.”

Rainn winced. “She wants to go for a walk with you.”

“I can speak for myself, you know.” The selkie queen piped in, crossing her arms over her chest, making her pregnant belly seem even more prominent. “I won’t bite.”

Rainn slanted her a look, clearly believing otherwise.

“I’ll go.” I volunteered.

Rainn opened his mouth to argue.

“Look at all those guards.” I waved a hand to the door. “I’ll be safe.”

Rainn gave his mother a look before turning back to me. “Don’t let her bully you.” He said.

“Which one of us is he speaking to?” The selkie queen cocked her head to the side.

“Both.” Rainn declared, throwing his hands up in defeat. “Neither? Who knows?”

I stifled a laugh and patted his shoulder as I walked through the door.

“I’ll return her in good health.” The selkie queen promised. “After I’ve questioned her about how many grandchildren I can expect.”

The selkie queen directed us to the door opposite Rainn’s suite, revealing the sunlit garden from the day before—though I remembered the rooms being further apart.

She smiled benignly, catching the confused expression I tried to hide.

“Selkie magic.” She explained. “It responds to expectation. To belief. If you believe that something will happen, it will. I expect a door to lead to a certain room, and the magic makes it so.”

“Handy.” I walked through the door, taking a moment to study the luscious roses in pots and the warmth of the sunshine on the bridge of my nose.

“It is.” She agreed. “Though selkie magic is not as individual as many other creeds. A selkie is most powerful when surrounded by their kin. The Skala beach is our stronghold, but it is also where our magic lies.” The selkie queen drifted to the table by the railing. She gestured for me to sit before she raised a hand, gesturing for one of the attendants in her entourage for refreshments.

“Should you be telling me this?” I smoothed my clammy hands over the fabric on my thighs.
