A small office sat to the right. Could she be in there? Sienna started moving in that direction and Gideon came into view. He was stationed at a card table, a computer in front of him, weighing something on a scale and then separating it into baggies. Drugs. Probably heroin.

“Hurry up.” Gideon stood and closed the box, indicating one of his workers should tape it shut. “We don’t have much time. This entire warehouse needs to be emptied tonight.”

Luis hopped out of the back of the van. “We’ll have to do another run. We won’t be able to move all the product left in one trip.”

Sienna’s eyes bulged at the number of boxes lining the far wall. There had to be several million dollars of drugs in the warehouse. At least five armed men, including the Greer brothers, were within striking distance and there was no sign of Ruby. What was she doing? If she was caught now, they’d kill her.

Fear swiftly stole her breath. Her hands trembled. Eli’s colleagues, Ryker and Cole, were en route, but would they arrive in time to help her if she got into trouble? Probably not. She was on her own. And she’d left Eli behind, caring for his shot brother. He wouldn’t be able to leave until the ambulance arrived. And even then, his mind would rightfully be on his injured sibling. It would take time for help to arrive.

This was foolish. Reckless. There wasn’t any proof that Ruby was even alive. But if Sienna left now, and she discovered that Ruby had been killed afterward, she’d never forgive herself.

God, have I made a terrible mistake? She warred with herself, uncertain about whether to continue forward or retreat. What do I do?

The door to the office opened and Tony Greer appeared. The bulky man had someone by the arm and hauled the person out of the office and into the main room of the warehouse. Slender. Dark hair.

Ruby!

She was dressed in ill-fitting clothes and shoes too big for her feet, but she was alive. Sienna’s heart leapt at the sight of the young woman, but her relief was short-lived when Tony shoved Ruby to the ground. She cried out. None of the men seemed to care.

Tony turned to Gideon. “What do we do with her?”

He sneered. “She’s a loose end. It’s time to snip it.”

Desperation swelled inside Sienna as Tony unholstered his handgun and took aim. Ruby began pleading for her life. Her terrified cries were heartbreaking. Sienna had to do something. Shooting Tony wouldn’t do a lick of good and it would identify her location. She couldn’t help Ruby if she was killed in the process of saving her.

Sienna’s gaze swept the ground, landing on a nearby wrench. It was rusted and broken, but it would do the trick. She lifted the item and threw it across the warehouse. It clattered against the cement.

Gideon whirled. “What was that?”

Every man in the place aimed a weapon toward the noise. Lightning lit up the sky, leaking into the warehouse through the large windows overhead. Sienna spotted another heavy duty screw. She wrapped her fingers around it, preparing to use it as another distraction. It wasn’t a good plan, but it was better than nothing. If she was lucky, the men would lock Ruby back up to conduct a search of the warehouse. That would buy time. Maybe enough for Ryker and Cole to arrive with backup.

Air shifted behind her one second before the barrel of a gun touched the back of her head.

TWENTY-SIX

“Drop your weapon.”

Sienna hesitated, but she had no choice but to obey.

Her gun clattered to the cement floor. The noise revealed her location to the rest of the men in the warehouse. In a flash, she was staring down the barrel of several guns. Some long-buried survival instinct silenced every one of her emotions. She was numb inside, even as her mind snapped into incredible focus.

The man holding her at gunpoint grabbed her arm and forced her to move forward, roughly manhandling her until they were close to Ruby. Then he pushed her. Sienna landed on the hard ground on her knees, and pain vibrated through her body.

She barely felt it. Her attention landed on Ruby’s tear-stained face. Terror poured from the young woman. Sienna took her hands, giving them a squeeze of comfort before shifting to face the person who’d snuck up on her.

Dallas Redding.

A thousand questions rolled through Sienna’s head, but she shoved them all to the side. Figuring out how Dallas fit into Gideon’s band of thugs wasn’t her priority.

She needed to figure out an escape plan. With Ruby.

Gideon gaped like a fish out of water. “How did she get in here?”

“You weren’t careful. Fortunately, it appears she’s alone.” He smirked in Sienna’s direction before turning toward Gideon. “What are you guys doing?” He assessed the situation with a flat stare. The van. The boxes. The men. Icy anger, more dangerous than anything Sienna had ever witnessed, emanated from him. “You aren’t thinking of bailing on our agreement, are you?”

Ruby trembled. Sienna shifted, drawing closer to the other woman, sensing her fear was rising exponentially. It seemed impossible considering Tony was about to shoot her a few moments ago, but her complexion was pasty and the whites around her eyes were showing.

Her gaze was fixed on Dallas. As if he was the source of her growing horror. Then she shifted her attention to Sienna. A flash of remorse flared in the depths of her eyes, as if she knew Sienna would pay the ultimate price for trying to save her.
