She groaned, disentangling herself from me.

“Is that your dad? Because…”

“No,” she said groggily. “It’s a text from Dr. Hawthorne’s office. Says the chromosomal results are in.”

I watched her as she squinted at the screen, her brows furrowing in concentration. For a second she just sat there, staring at the small device as if it held all the answers to the enigma that was life.

Her fingers hovered over the screen, a curtain of silence falling between us. I found myself holding my breath as anticipation knotted in my stomach with an intensity that bordered on painful.

"And?" I finally asked, unable to withstand the silence any longer. Her eyes flickered up to meet mine, an unreadable expression on her face.

The phone slipped from her fingers and landed noiselessly on the bed between us. She swallowed hard. “They’re…they’re perfect.”

“The results?”

“Yeah,” she said softly. “And the babies.”

“Babies?”

“Yeah,” she replied. “Twins.”

Chapter Thirty-Three: Tristan

Twins. The word echoed around inside my head, bouncing off the walls of my consciousness. I'd always known that being a father would change me, but the reality that Adriana and I were having twins hit me with an intensity that was both terrifying and exhilarating. It was like I was standing on the edge of a precipice, staring down at the unknown. I was terrified of the fall, but there was also a part of me that couldn’t wait to jump.

I cupped her cheek, thumb tracing her bottom lip as her eyes met mine. “Perfect just like their mother,” I said, unable to contain the grin spreading across my face.

Adriana gave a tearful laugh, leaning into my touch. “We’re going to be terrible parents,” she mumbled.

“No. You’re going to be amazing.”

"I'm scared, Tristan," Adriana admitted, her voice barely a whisper. Her eyes were solemn, reflecting the flickering light of the room. The weight of her words hung in the silence that followed, both of us realizing the enormity of what we were stepping into.

“Same,” I said. “I’m so scared.”

“You are?”

“Never been this scared in my life, even with a gun in my face,” I replied. "But we'll do it together," I promised, my voice firm and resolute. I kissed her forehead gently, pulling her against my chest. "We'll figure it out together."

For a moment, we just sat there in silence, each of us lost in our thoughts. The world outside was in chaos, two merciless Mafia families feuding with a ferocity that was both terrifying and awe-inspiring. But for now, in the sanctuary of my childhood bedroom, we existed within our own serene bubble. The reality of impending parenthood was both daunting and exhilarating.

“What’s the sex?” I asked. “Do the results tell you?”

In the dim light of the room, I saw her eyes well with tears as she nodded. A smile tugged at her lips as she looked up at me. "A boy and a girl," she managed to whisper, her voice thick with emotion.

My heart stuttered to a stop, the weight of her words sinking in. A boy and a girl. My children. Our children. I felt a lump forming in my throat, my emotions threatening to spill over. No amount of mafia wars, deadly deals, or power plays could have prepared me for this moment.

“So I was half-right,” I said.

She laughed. “You know, that isn’t that impressive considering the odds.”

“Hey,” I defended, my grin turning into a full-blown smile as I pulled her closer. “I got the boy part right. That’s got to count for something.”

“Sure.” She rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the smile pulling at her lips.

I watched Adriana fall asleep again, her body curled up against mine. Her soft breaths were the only sound in the room as I held her close, not ready to let her go just yet. My mind kept playing out the words over and over again–a boy and a girl. A family. Our family.

It was a few hours later when I found myself standing outside Adriana's father's mansion. Silvio Orsini, the mafia kingpin, was a formidable man by anyone's standards. His reputation preceded him in our circles, his name enough to send shivers down even the most hardened criminal's spine. But now, he wasn't just the mafia kingpin–he was also my soon-to-be father-in-law. Adriana stood next to me, looking far less apprehensive than I did.
