While I have a modicum of privacy, I snatch the sweats off the floor and yank them up my legs, so I don’t give him a show of my bare legs and panty-covered ass if he comes back.

The sound of cabinets opening and closing seconds later tells me that he decided for escape as well, which I can’t be mad at. If I woke up with his dick in my hand, I would absolutely do my best to evade him as well.

Letting the whole morning roll off my back, I straighten my shoulders and pull a hand through my hair before dipping into the bathroom to rub some toothpaste on my teeth and clean up as best I can with literally nothing here.

By the time I make it into the kitchen, there’s a steaming coffee maker on the counter dripping dark, life-affirming liquid into its pot, and I take a deep breath of the heavenly scent.

“Looks like about two more feet fell last night. Phones are still out.” Boone’s gruff, like he’s not any happier about being stuck with me than he was the night before.

“Well, it’s light out now, so I can probably hike it to town and then just come back for my car later.”

Far be it for me to hang out where I’m not wanted. Fingers against lady parts be damned.

I hung my pants near the fire, and when I check them, they’re luckily dry. Those and my jacket should see me back to town well enough.

“It’s seven miles to town. With three feet of snow on the ground. The roads haven’t even been plowed this far out yet.”

I shrug. “And your point?”

“You can’t hike it back to town in this.”

“A little bit of snow isn’t going to kill me.” Quieter to myself I mutter, “It sure beats dealing with your grumpy ass all day.”

“A little? You call nearly thirty-six inches of snow a little?” he scoffs.

“Listen. You went out of your way to help me out last night and I appreciate it. Yes, it’ll be cold and miserable, but I’ll be fine.”

Another grunt is my response before Boone pulls open the fridge and yanks out a carton of eggs. “Or you could stay until the plows come through and I give you a ride back to town?”

Why is he offering when he’s so clearly uncomfortable with my presence here?

“I don’t understand you,” I say.

“What does that mean?”

“It means that you got all growly when I showed up last night, which to be fair, was pretty warranted considering you were hurt and I arrived on your doorstep after dark in a snowstorm. But then you were wrapped around me like a tick this morning, and now you’re back to growly and grumpy.” My arms flap around me.

“Growly?” The muscle in his jaw jumps with the word.

I nod. “Yeah, growly. I didn’t plan to be trapped here, and I certainly didn’t plan to wake up with your hand a centimeter from my fun button, but it is what it is. You don’t see me being all angry because of it. I’ll hike back to town and get out of your way, problem solved.”

He scrubs a hand through his bed head before biting out, “You’re not hiking back to town.”

I cock an eyebrow. “I’m not?”

“You’re not. I’m going to make breakfast and we’re going to wait this out. I’ll try to be…less growly. Just go…do something. Somewhere else.”

I can’t stop my smile any more than I can stop the sun from shining. Fucking with Boone first thing in the morning is fun. I haven’t even had my coffee yet to fully appreciate this moment, but it’s definitely fun.

Boone wants me out of his way while he makes us breakfast, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s because he’s annoyed with me and the circumstances, or if I’m a distraction.

Looking past him to the big fluffy piles of snow, I figure it’ll be a while before we’re clear enough to head back to town, and time will tell one way or the other.

BOONE

Frustration sizzles in my bloodstream like water droplets on a hot pan. Waking up next to Jem was enough to tempt a saint. Waking up with my hand cushioned between her juicy thighs, all that soft skin under my fingertips? The limits of my control were threadbare by the time I made my escape.
