“He…uh. He said he had other things to take care of.” Ryth murmured.

“Things that are more important than me, I’m guessing,” I responded, swallowing the agony which filled my chest.

My father’s absence shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did. After all…I should be used to it. But the truth was, it cut all the way to my heart.

“I’m sure there is a—” Kane started, until I shot a glare his way.

“Save it,” I answered. “I’ve heard it all before.”

I turned around and started walking, leaving them to stare after me. The faint sound of their voices came, someone even called my name. But I couldn’t speak around the lump in my throat. Tears blurred the gray Explorer in front of me, until soft footsteps sounded.

A shadow fell, covering my path. I felt him before I saw him, towering, silent.

“You don’t have to worry about me,” I rasped.

Still, the mountain said nothing, just stood there beside me, staring at the same glint on the Explorer’s grill as I did. Tears spilled, running down my cheeks. We stood there while the others talked amongst themselves until I swiped my tears away. “Fucking family, huh?”

I glanced his way.

He was waiting, seizing my stare as he gave a slow nod. “Fucking family.”

I turned back to the others, watching as they gathered themselves. Viv gripped Ryth in a massive hug that had her molding her body around Viv’s belly. Both turned to me as I neared.

“I’m sorry.” Ryth’s voice shook. “I didn’t want to tell you.”

“It’s fine.” I wrapped one arm around her and the other around Viv. Whatever our father failed at, he did one thing right and that was bringing all three of us together.

“Then we have our plan.” London reached out and grasped Caleb’s hand in his grip before turning to Nick and Tobias. “Call me if anything changes.”

He spoke to them as though they were the ones planning it all, never once directing the conversation to Riven or Hunter.

Nick just glanced our way.

“Sure,” Hunter muttered. “If anything changes, you’ll be the first to know.”

They left then. My stomach clenched as I watched them climb into their cars and drive away. I waved to my sisters until they were gone and we were alone. Fuck…we were alone.

I turned around, to find Kane and Thomas both peeking at Riven and watching Hunter carefully as he gathered the masks and the camouflage uniforms from the ground and strode toward the main house.

“Riven,” Kane called. “You ready to go?”

The hairs on the back of my neck rose as Riven stared after Hunter, then muttered something savage under his breath and followed him.

“Fuck,” Thomas muttered. “That can’t be good.”

No…

No, it can’t be.

We all took off, chasing after the other two. By the time we yanked open the front door and raced inside, Riven’s snarl echoed through the house.

“What fucking game are you playing here?”

I winced at the danger in his tone. We tore past the entryway and through the living room before we found them. Hunter had stopped, his arms still laden with the mess of masks and uniforms. But he didn’t answer, just stepped around Riven when he stepped in his way.

Neither of them was moving or allowing the other to pass.

“You don’t want to do this, Riven,” Hunter warned.
