I just couldn’t.

Buzzzz…

My body clenched and my balls tightened with the sound. I unleashed a roar, bellowing my rage and agony as that rod was driven into my stomach once more. My boots skidded, kicking as my body obeyed a new master and its name was pain.

“That’s it!” he hollered and laughed. “Dance for me, motherfucker!”

I ground my teeth, fighting to hold on as the room shuddered and shook all around me, until finally those jaws of agony released their hold and the beast that was the man stepped away.

The chains around my wrists shook and clanked. I slumped, putting all my weight on my shoulders.

Hard gasps filled my ears.

Until the click of a lock sounded and the spill of bright light washed in for a second, then it was gone again.

“He’s still alive?”

I sucked in a breath and fire exploded in my chest, leaving me to cough and gasp until I thought I was choking to death.

“Does that answer your question?” The bastard muttered.

The clack…clack…clack of her heels resounded in the room. My head felt like it was made of lead, taking every ounce of energy to drag my gaze upwards until I looked into her eyes.

Those cold, unfathomable eyes.

She looked so much like our mother.

Distant.

Sad.

Unforgiving in the wake of our sister’s disappearance.

From that fateful day she’d only had one child, and she’d been taken from her.

“Brother dearest.” Her lips curled into a sneer.

I shook my head. “No.” The word was a whisper. “You’re…not…my…sister.”

“Oh, I’m sure you’re regretting that now, aren’t you?”

Regret.

That was something I’d never had when it came to her. It was all anger. All rage. Directed at the one person I blamed for it all…Riven.

She opened her hand. “Give it to me.”

My tormentor scowled and looked her way. “I don’t think…”

She snapped her gaze toward him. “I don’t pay you to think, do I?”

Pay?

I shook my head as the guard handed over the rod.

“No.” I croaked as she took the rod that buzzed and hummed in her grip, her painted red nails so out of place on something designed to torture.

Or, maybe it wasn’t?
