I glance down at the plastic test in my hand.

Andrew and I have been wanting to have another child and felt like now was time, but everything happened so quick and so sudden once I got off birth control that it caught me by surprise.

After we got married almost six years ago, we focused on making up for lost time.

After the NHL, Andrew transitioned into coaching. His schedule is flexible, and we get to see each other often, especially now that he’s coaching Alissa’s youth hockey team.

In addition to coaching, Andrew also founded a hockey training facility in the neighborhood. The facility provides state-of-the-art training equipment and expert coaching staff to help players of all ages and skill levels hone their abilities on the ice.

I took online classes and got my literature degree. I oversee the marketing material for our training facility and enjoy writing blog posts and sending out updates to everyone who is a part of our community.

I take a seat on the couch in the living room, where more memories are.

There is a gigantic, framed photo of me, Alissa, and Andrew, a picture of my parents, Dan and Andrew at the grand opening of Dan & Dave’s next store in Los Angeles, and pictures of our various travels.

But it’s the photos of Andrew coaching Alissa's hockey team that makes me smile the most.

I pick one up.

The photo captures a moment frozen in time. Andrew, clad in a hockey jersey, stands beside Alissa on the rink, his expression a mix of pride and determination as he offers guidance.

Alissa, holding a hockey stick, wears an enthusiastic grin as she listens intently to his instructions.

The bond between Andrew and Alissa warms my heart. In that photo, I see not just a coach and a player, but a father and daughter, connected by a love for the game and for each other.

He’s been such a great mentor to her, not just on the ice but in life too.

He’s such a wonderful father.

I look at the test again.

It’s time.

I open the front door. “Andrew, Ali?” I call out.

“What, mom?” Ali shouts back.

“Come here you two. I have something to tell you,” I say, trying to sound positive, but feel like I’m just sounding ominous.

They come inside, Alissa rushes through first with Andrew following behind.

“I swear I didn’t eat your pickles!” Andrew says, raising his hands in self-defense.

“My pickles aren’t there anymore?” I narrow my eyes at him. “Anyway, that’s not what I want to talk about.”

The two look at each other, expecting trouble. I can’t stand how cute they look doing that, like accomplices stealing from the cookie jar.

“Neither of you did nothing wrong,” I say. “Come on, take a seat.”

They follow me to the couch and sit with me. I take a deep breath and decide to just come out with it.

“Ali, remember how we sat down with you recently and told you we were ready to expand our family?” I ask her.

Alissa’s mouth gapes open, her eyes wide.

“Oh my God. You’re pregnant!” She connects the dots right away.

I show her the test, and she squeals and hugs me tight, shaking me with excitement.
