“Then why did you disappear on me?” she demands.

I bite my lip, taking a deep breath and carefully measure my words. “I got caught up in my new life, Emily. The money, the fame. But wait… why are you even here if you’re so angry with me?”

She lets out a weepy sob and hides her face behind her hands.

“Because I wanted to make things right between us, Andrew. Just like Dan said. But apparently, that’s not possible. I’m going to go home on my own. I’ll just call a car.”

She goes for her phone, but I gently grab her wrist, pulling her close to me.

“No. Stay.” I whisper, my other hand landing on her back, my lips getting close to hers.

Her eyelashes flutter, and her cheeks turn a lovely shade of red.

Without hesitation, I kiss her, and her lips are just as soft as I remember. Our lips stay still together for a while, in the sweetest embrace. Before Emily can pull back, I gently move my tongue inside of her mouth. At first I do so timidly, afraid that I’ll startle her, but then I become more enthusiastic.

Slowly, she replies to my advance. While I caress her shoulder, her hands hold me by the collar of my jersey. When I hear her breathing heavily, it quickly fill me with lustful hunger.

When I finally pull back, I gently touch her cheek and murmur, “Wanna come to my hotel room?”

Emily and looks from one side to another, either trying to find the right words or a way to escape.

“Andrew, I…” She is unable to speak and moves her hands around wildly.

“Nothing needs to happen.” I reach for her hand. “We can just talk.”

She fixes me with a crooked stare, the skepticism in her eyes hinting at her struggle to trust me again.

I know I made a big mistake.

But I’m ready to heal the wounds.

Chapter Six

EMILY

The moment we arrive I am in awe of the luxurious hotel room. It’s about the same size as our upstairs back home, complete with a balcony, living and dining room.

“Why do you need a room this big?” I joke as we go inside, and he closes the door behind us.

“Dad stays in the adjacent room,” he says, placing his keys and wallet on the nightstand. “We are just here until I can find a house. But he’s not here right now.”

I remain rooted in place as he settles onto the bed.

A flicker of recognition crosses his face when he realizes what he is implying. He quickly gets up and walks to the mini fridge in the living room, grabbing two beer cans.

I can only imagine how much they cost, but it’s like not it matters to him. I still can’t believe he turned into a billionaire.

Andrew sits down on the three-seater, and I sit on the opposite side.

“How’s your daughter? Alissa, right?” he asks me, timidly trying to break the ice.

“Great,” I say with a smile. I cheer up at the mention of her, but know I need to stay guarded. “She just won her white belt in karate and is working on a puppet making project for her pre-K class.”

“Wow, that’s impressive.” He gives me his beautiful boyish smile, entrancing my heart down a rabbit hole. “I would like to meet her someday.”

“She does love hockey,” I say noncommittally.

I’m just making conversation but don’t actually want to make plans for him to meet her.
