“Soon it will be over, babe,” I kiss her hand to reassure her. “I’ll have a look at my contract right now.”

We get to the front door. Emily kisses my shoulder before I go inside.

Alissa is speaking loudly, her excitement evident for the whole house to hear.

“What’s going on?” Emily asks, laughing with a hand on her chest.

“Well, dad confided in me that he bought a mini golf set for her. She must be ecstatic with the new toy,” I smile, signaling Emily with a hand wave for her to follow me.

“You two are going to spoil her rotten!” Emily shakes her head, her amusement evident even though she speaks through gritted teeth.

“Well, it’s your job to ruin the party any time, mom!” I toss the blame on her with a snort.

“Aw, right, blame everything on me!”

While I sit by my computer and turn it on, she takes a seat on my reading chair and says with surprise, “Lots of books.”

“Hey, I like reading,” I say. “I usually look up how they end, but I read the first half!” I joke.

“What are you looking for?” Emily asks, coming to peek over my shoulder.

“My contract with Terry,” I say, finding the correct folder. “Hopefully I’ll find how much I have to pay him if I quit.”

“And what exactly does Terry do?” she asks, then places a hand on my shoulder.

“Negotiates my contract with the league, takes care of public appearances, publicity, and my finances,” I explain. “I would even consider keeping him around after retiring, if he wasn’t so aggressive…”

I open the contract, but immediately get lost trying to read it.

“How fluent are you in legal jargon?” I ask Emily, catching her off guard.

“Um, not very…” She pauses, placing a finger on her lip.

“Hmm,” I muse, resting my hand on my chin before reaching for my phone. “I need to make a call.”

She peers over my shoulder as I tap on the messaging app and go to the team group, making a group video call to everybody.

They pick up one by one, some happy to see me, some cursing me. “Hey, guys, this is going to be quick!” I say.

“Go on, Connoly, I’m wasting time with you when I could be with my kid,” Brooks groans, looking grumpy and annoyed with me.

“Um, I just need a lawyer recommendation. I got an issue with the contract with my agent, and I can’t use my lawyer because they work close together,” I explain.

Allan scratches his chin while the others think. Brooks just exits the call without a goodbye.

“I can send you mine, she may even be able to work today if you ask nicely,” Allan says with a smile.

“Alright, that’s all I need!” I wave to them with the intent of hanging up.

“Hi, guys!” Emily interjects before I shut down the call.

The team greets her with cheer, and I bid them goodbye right after, and end the call.

Allan texts me the contact of his lawyer within a few minutes, along with a message saying, ‘Her name is Lilly Stevens, I just talked to her. You can call her now.’

‘Thank you, man.’ I text back, and then immediately call Miss Stevens.

I put her on speaker. Emily continues to watch me intently, as the phone rings and we wait with expectation.
