For what he did, I want his blood pouring from the sky and his head on a spike in my front yard with wild dogs eating up the rest of his miserable body. But baby steps.

The truth is, while I might need a wife, I could have picked any woman I wanted. I don’t need anything from Dominic, not even his daughter. I just gave him the most convincing story I knew he would believe.

My plan is to destroy him piece by piece until there’s nothing left, but he doesn’t know that. He might suspect it, but he doesn’t know.

The reason I haven’t exposed him yet is that I believe there’s more to what he did than I know. The evidence I have shows him setting me and Kane up, but I don’t know why. The trail ran cold. That part is what I’m still trying to figure out.

If I strike now he could potentially get himself out of trouble, but this asshole doesn’t want to risk such a big scandal with his campaign going so well.

When I choose to strike I want to make sure I destroy him beyond repair forever. Like he set out to do to me.

“Is there not another way?” His voice cuts into the silence and his expression seems almost desperate. “Must you take my daughter? I wanted more for her.”

“I am someone’s son, someone’s grandson, someone’s great-grandson. They all wanted more for me than what you put me through last year.” I harden my gaze so he can see how serious I am. “In other words, no. There is no other way. You should have thought of your daughter before you decided to fuck with me and mine. Is that understood?”

This must be hell for him.

He looks like a man who’s on his last breath. “Understood.”

“Perfect. I’ll have the contracts drawn up by Friday. I’ll bring them to your office myself before lunchtime. Once we sign, I’ll deposit the money.” It’s five million. The money is bait, like fish food or breadcrumbs. I want to see where it will lead me.

“That sounds reasonable to me. Thank you. I never meant to implicate you in the scandal last year. It just happened that way, but it was never my intention.”

Bastard. He’s not sorry, and he probably wants to know how I found out. I’m certain he was shocked, too, when I managed to prove my innocence.

The answer to both of those is that I’m lucky Jericho has the skills to find certain things out. That’s the answer. The type of things Jericho can do sometimes are near miraculous.

“Just make sure the plan runs smoothly. I don’t want any more problems from you. I trust that you will tell your daughter what she needs to know so she’ll cooperate.”

“I’ve already done so. You won’t have any problems from any of us.”

“Good.” I want to mention Ryan, but I hold back. I should also mention last night, but I already decided to keep that to myself. If Ryan becomes a problem I’ll deal with him. “That’s all from me.”

With nothing more to say, I turn and walk away. It’s time to leave this place, get myself home, and regroup.

I walk through the door. When I’m on the other side and feel like I can breathe again, I make my way back the way I came but stop when I see the princess standing outside on the terrace.

With her back turned to me, she’s resting her hands on the stone balcony. Her shoulders are slumped over and her head is hanging.

She looks like Juliet mourning the loss of her Romeo.

What does that make me? The villain in her story?

No. I’m the hunter. The guy who pursues justice no matter the cost. She just got caught in the war.

Luna must feel my gaze on her because she straightens and looks around at me as if I called her name.

When her eyes lock with mine, she stares back at me with red eyes. She was crying.

Poor thing.

I know she hates me, and that’s fine. I was never going to get married for love, but as I take in her raven hair, moist blue eyes, and heart-shaped face, I feel myself becoming more fascinated with her than I was last night.

At the very least, I know I won’t be bored.

Last night was for Ryan but he won’t be the one taking her virginity.

I will.
