"Okay. Thank you." I sound hollow, talking but not really mindful of what I’m saying.

"You're welcome. I hope you find your sister. Take care.”

“Bye."

The woman hangs up, and I’m left standing there feeling so numb I can scarcely breathe.

Layla never went to the retreat.

So, she lied?

The pictures she posted on Facebook were lies?

What if the rest of her posts are all lies too?

But why would she do that?

And… what if she’s not in the Maldives?

If she’s not there, then where is she?

God. What if Layla is in trouble?

I cover my mouth as terror seizes my mind.

I try to calm myself because my already panicked-stricken state may just be making me paranoid. But the deranged thought in my mind is the only thing that has made sense since Layla left.

Over the months that she’s been gone, I’ve thought countless times that her behavior was quite peculiar, even for her. She's always stayed in touch with me in the past. Always.

The sister I know would also never send me a postcard for my wedding, wishing me congratulations. Even if that's all she could do, she would've called me by now to speak to me.

So, what if Layla’s in trouble?

I haven't seen her in nine months.

Anything could have happened to her.

Chapter 28

Hunter

Iwalk into the bedroom and find Luna sitting on the bed, slumped against the stack of pillows behind her.

She straightens when she sees me and looks at me as if her world has ended.

My steps quicken as I rush to her side and pull her into my arms. She sinks into my chest, feeling weightless to me.

"I came as soon as I could. I'm sorry I didn't get your message earlier," I whisper into her hair. I was already too late when the message came through. It was lunchtime when she sent it. Now it’s four o'clock. “I was in meetings, so I wasn’t able to get to my phone.”

"It's okay.” She speaks in a muffled voice. “Thank you for coming back early. I’m sorry I disturbed you."

"No. Don’t apologize. I will always be there when you need me.”

We pull apart, and she gives me a weak smile.

“Thank you.”

“Always.”
