Jericho has just arrived with his findings in regard to Layla. He’s waiting for me in my office.

I got him on the case straightaway. I decided to take today off to spend it with Luna, and I wanted to be available in case Jericho needed me.

I sent Luna away with Paige an hour ago. They went to a craft fair and should be away for a few more hours.

I needed time to figure things out. Luna also needed to take her mind off the situation. Thankfully, Paige, as always, was ready to help. It’s times like these when I’m grateful for the close relationship I have with her.

I reach my office and find Jericho. He regards me with the same stern expression he’s been giving me all these long months. It’s a clue that we're going to have one of our difficult conversations.

I just hope he doesn’t tell me something disastrous, like Layla died.

"Please tell me nothing has happened to her. I don’t know how I’d be able to explain that to Luna.”

"I have no evidence that she’s dead, but I can’t tell you she’s alright either," he replies, straight to the point. "In the same breath, I found some very interesting things."

"What did you find?"

"Layla's Facebook posts are all fake," he replies, and my chest caves.

"Fake?"

"Every single post since the time she supposedly left New York was done by someone else. Here’s where it gets interesting. The IP address of the posts is from Dominic's house."

I stare back at him in disbelief. "You're kidding me."

"Someone in the house is posting to Layla’s social media accounts. They’re using a VPN, but I can see straight through shit like that. There’s also no call records on Layla’s phone since she left New York. Not for the number Luna has, although at this point I doubt there’s any other number for her.”

“Jesus, this is getting insane.”

“Yes. I think if the Facebook posts are fake, the postcards Luna got are also fake too. And look at this." He reaches into his envelope and pulls out a picture. It's of Dominic and Layla sitting in a park. “I picked this up on surveillance. That park is in France. The date of that meeting is four months ago."

"Why has Dominic been making it look like his daughter is somewhere else? Why in hell would he do that?"

"Maybe the same reason for everything else. To keep secrets. With that said, I think Luna is right. I think her sister is in trouble. We know her father is a dangerous man, and no offense, I know you love your wife, but Dominic gave her to you to keep you quiet, so what did he do with the other daughter?"

My insides go rigid as I think about this. "Can you find Layla?”

"I’ll do my best. Has Luna spoken to her father yet?”

“No. It’s been difficult getting through to him. She tried calling last night, but the signal is bad.”

“I think the time has come to speak to her, Hunter. And it’s best she doesn’t contact her father or stepmom. You’ll need to tell her why.”

He knows that I’ll need to tell Luna everything else to make her understand.

This was the risk I was willing to take.

In the beginning, I just didn’t know that I’d be risking my heart.

"Okay."

The moment of reckoning has landed on my doorstep, and I have to face the truth.

All of it.
