Page 29 of Ruthless Hunter

No. Not ask. Demand. I’m going to demand that I have one.

That’s the plan.

Once I decided I was going to do that, I managed to get through the day.

I even managed to shower and change into my pajamas when night fell. Then

I waited.

It’s ten now, so I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever given that I arrived just before ten this morning.

I've been sitting in the window bay re-reading Bleach, my favorite manga. I needed something to distract me while I waited. The problem is I’m so exhausted my eyes barely stay open, but I don’t want to fall asleep inside this room.

Sleep is one of the most vulnerable positions a person can place themselves in. The thought of being asleep in here when Hunter gets home unnerves me.

Ten becomes eleven and the words on the page start to blur, mixing into one blob of floating letters and images.

My head dips and my eyes flutter.

Shit. I’m falling asleep. Ugh, I can’t believe I’m here fighting sleep because of Hunter.

What the hell kind of work would he need to be doing on a Sunday anyway? And all damn day?

Unless he’s not working. And he’s with someone. Some woman.

Work could be code for that. I doubt he’d tell his staff that he was off with some woman on the day his soon-to-be wife moves into his home.

Great. I think I’m right, which leads me to imagine what kind of life I’ll have with him.

We don’t know each other so I don’t expect him to have the normal feelings a man should have for his wife, but that doesn’t mean I’ll understand if he cheats.

And of course he will. Why wouldn’t he?

The Internet is full of articles about him and all the women deemed lucky enough to be with him. He might have picked me but I’m just a contract, so he doesn’t have to be true to me.

Feeling like my head is going to fall off, I lean it against the wall and rest my eyes. I just need to close them for a few seconds.

“Wakey, wakey.” The deep low timbre of that voice I’ve come to recognize fills my mind, pulling me from…

Wait…

Damn it, I fell asleep.

My lids pop open with a start and meet those warm champagne-colored eyes beaming down at me.

Hunter is standing a breath away, staring at me as I wake from a deep slumber. The clock behind him informs me that it’s one in the morning.

I straighten with annoyance and my breath suddenly goes ragged as I take in his presence. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen him wearing a color other than full black. In a white button-down shirt and gray pants with a matching tie, he’s the opposite of the darkness he’s shown me so far.

“This is what you read?” He holds up the book I must have dropped and smirks.

“Give me my book.” I stand and reach for it, feeling like a pixie next to him.

Both times we’ve been this close I was wearing heels. Now that I’m barefoot he can see my real height, which is nothing against his.

He hands me my book and I hold it to my chest as if I need it for my heart to beat.

“Thought you’d be more of a classical literature kind of girl.” He looks me over.
