At the very least I could have saved myself if I’d waited for the guy to speak when he started to, but I cut him off.

If I’d allowed him to say one more word I would have confirmed he wasn’t Ryan. That guy had a deep baritone voice, whereas Ryan is a tenor.

Ryan, where the hell are you?

And who was that guy?

The promise in his last words sounded as ominous as his touch.

I don’t want to speak to him in the morning.

In fact, I wish to never see him again.

Chapter 2

Luna

“Holy shit. Are you serious?” Emily gasps, her voice sounding as high-pitched and animated on the phone as it would if she were standing in front of me.

“I’m totally serious.” I’ve just given her the full rundown of last night’s embarrassing-as-hell activities. Emily is my cousin/best friend, so I couldn’t wait to speak to her. I needed some of her strength and wisdom to help deal with my bizarre situation.

“Oh, sweetie. I’m so, so sorry.”

“It was complete hell, Emily. Absolute hell.” I wince, balancing the phone on my shoulder while I sit on my bed and slump against the headboard. “I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life.”

My room is big, bright and beautiful with salmon-pink walls, a queen bed and trendy furniture that complements the rows of classical literature and manga books lining the walls, but I feel like I’m in a tiny dark hole with no air to breathe.

“Please, try not to feel bad.”

“Believe me, I’m trying, but it’s hard.”

I’ve barely slept. I worried that my new house guest was going to tell my father what happened. That’s why I never called Dad last night and decided to wait it out.

I kept thinking Dad was going to trash me out, but the only message I got from him came in this morning, letting me know he and Kimberly would be home by nine thirty. It’s nearly that time now.

And so far there’s no indication that Dad knows anything happened. If he did, the world would have heard him shouting his lecture on morals and principles from the highest mountain. The crazy thing is, it’s usually my sister, Layla, who gets those types of lectures. Not me.

“I wish I could have spoken to you last night,” Emily says with a deep sigh.

“No, don’t worry. I shouldn’t have bothered you when you’re spending time with Aiden.”

“Don’t be silly, you know it’s no bother at all. Aiden and I are always doing something.” She giggles in that girly way that suggests he’s either in the room with her, or she’s just seen him passing by.

Aiden is the fiancé every girl dreams of. He’s spoiled Emily rotten for the last three years. They’re vacationing in Florida, looking at potential venues for their wedding next summer. I didn’t want to bother them but I messaged Emily last night asking her to get back to me when she got a chance.

“We’ve been so busy, I could use the break,” she adds.

I relax my shoulders, feeling less bad that I interrupted their lovefest. “Thank you. I appreciate you.”

“I know you do.” I can imagine her nodding her dark bob and widening her eyes the way I do when I’m trying to be convincing. Emily looks as similar to me as Layla does. She’s also close enough to me that when people mistake us for sisters, we don’t correct them. “I wish your father had told you Ryan wasn’t coming. He must have known that if he arranged for someone else to stay in the guest house.”

“I know, right? I get that Dad doesn’t like to involve us in business but this is a little different.”

“Absolutely. And you still haven’t heard anything from Ryan either?”

“Nothing at all.” Ryan was the first person I called after my encounter with the house guest, but I couldn’t reach him. “Every time I called his phone went to voicemail.”

“Maybe he was out of range.”
