“No.” I’m starting to sound and feel like a robot.

“You two seriously never did anything?”

“We kissed.” My answer brings out something dark in his gaze.

“When?”

“Christmas.”

“What kind of kiss was it?”

Asshole. He knows the kiss I shared with Ryan wasn’t like his, but he wants me to say it. I won’t.

“Why are you asking me that?”

“It’s interesting.”

“Why?”

“Because you wouldn’t have kissed me the way you did if you were really in love with him.”

I consider him long and hard while his gaze burrows deep into mine, probing into my mind.

My lips part to answer but no words come. That fuels his smile with more malice.

“Am I right?”

“You kissed me. You caught me off guard,” I try to explain.

“Yet you kissed me back like you wanted to fuck me.”

“You are such an asshole.” I try to get up but he grabs my hip and holds me in place so I can’t move.

“We’ve established the asshole thing, Bellissima. It’s old news now. Don’t get so worked up from hearing the truth.” He smirks. “It’s just as bad as that other fruitless thing you’re doing.”

“What other thing?” I glare at him.

“Insisting on believing you’re in love with a man who would have known how you felt about him but never chased you.”

Hunter catches me off guard again but this time I’m frozen in thought.

Weeks ago when Emily pointed out that same thing it gave me a wakeup call. I’m getting another one now but hearing Hunter, who’s known me for only a handful of weeks, say it makes me feel like such a fool.

“You think I only believe I am?” My voice is so soft and low it’s like I haven’t spoken.

“I know it.”

“What makes you say that? You don’t know Ryan.” The comment sounds like a feeble attempt to justify my feelings.

“I know enough to tell you that you saved yourself for an asshole who doesn’t deserve you. Soldier boy had years but he probably went around to every girl who would ride his cock before he even looked at you.”

I wish he weren’t so right, but he is.

“If he’s always been in your life and had the kind of feelings he should have for you, you would never have been available to me,” Hunter continues with more truth. “And, Bellissima, if he kissed you so many months ago, knowing he was coming back from the Army, he should have made you his wife.”

“Maybe he needed more time.”

Hunter shakes his head. “Fuck… no. Time is irrelevant when a man knows what he wants. He’ll create time out of nothing if he has to. I didn’t need time to make you mine. I claimed you the first moment I looked at you. And when I kissed you, I couldn’t wait to kiss you again.”
