Hunter takes my hand and slides the ring onto my finger, then we both look at it resting there, fitting so perfectly it’s like I should have always been wearing it.

He never proposed when I found out we were getting married. This isn’t a proposal either.

It feels exactly like what he described earlier. Like he’s claiming me.

The way he’s looking at me, wearing nothing but his engagement ring on my finger, is something I don’t think I’ll ever forget. It’s the look of the conqueror, the victor, the hunter. A shark.

A deadly smile slides across his lips, sending a chill over my body. “Now you know more about me, Bellissima. And more about who you truly want, and who you belong to.”

The menace in his voice reminds me that we’re still playing a game. One I just lost. Because now Hunter Le Blanche knows I want him. And I know it, too.

With that victory under his belt, he picks up my nightshirt and panties from the floor and hands them to me.

Feeling like an enormous weight just landed on my chest and crushed it, I take the clothes, slide off the desk in humiliation, and put the nightshirt back on.

“Go to bed, Bellissima. I think we’ve had enough revelations for one night,” he adds in an even tone.

I don’t answer, and I don’t stay to put my panties back on either. I just leave.

This is the second time in my life—and in the same month—that I’ve fled from this man with my dignity in tatters.

Shaky legs carry me down the corridor, along with full-blown shame and another rude awakening about my feelings for Ryan.

How can I claim to love him when every part of my being was calling out for Hunter to take me? I begged him to keep going. To keep pleasuring me. To keep touching me.

I actually begged him.

And the worst thing is… I know I’d do it again.

Chapter 14

Hunter

Iwatch the last traces of Luna’s long black hair float through the office door as she flees from me. Her long golden legs carry her away as fast as she can move.

At that moment my father’s warning about not creating more trouble for myself hits me loud and clear, as if he’s standing in the room before me with a bullhorn.

When he said it I instinctively thought he was talking about trouble with Dominic. But now I’ve opened another one of Pandora’s boxes and unleashed something I’m not sure I can control.

It’s desire, need and want all rolled into one, for a woman who was meant to be nothing to me but a means to an end.

People say the truth can set you free, but sometimes discovering it hurts more than living the lie.

When you’re alive in the lie you’re none the wiser. You don’t know any different than what you’ve been telling yourself. Life is what you believe it to be until it’s not.

Until an asshole like me comes along and removes the wool from your eyes, allowing you to see clearly what’s real and what’s not.

Once again, I’ve become the villain. I unleashed a truth my bride never wanted to face, and in the process I unlocked truth for myself, too.

I was determined to use Luna to get what I want and not get suckered in by her beauty, or my intense attraction to her. But look at me standing here with my mind a fucking mess and my dick so hard I know I’m going to have to jerk off to relieve myself.

Earlier, when I got home, I went upstairs to find her. I actually thought she’d be asleep because of the time.

On seeing she wasn’t in the bedroom, I decided to check the library, so I took the stairs down that lead to my office.

That’s when I saw the lights on and knew it could only be Luna in here.

Paige is the only person I allow inside my office. Since she usually cleans in the morning and would only be in here at this hour if I sent her, it was a dead giveaway that my office visitor was my dear bride.
