I straighten and stare back at him, processing this new possibility. “How the hell are we going to find that out?”

He shakes his head. “Right now, I’m not sure. It will either take up a whole heap of time, or I’ll get a breakthrough and it’ll be over in an afternoon.”

My shoulders slump. “God, this is hell.”

“I know. I can keep going, but just know I’m going to have to explore other avenues. By the time I find anything—if I do—it might be well outside the timeframe you were thinking of.”

Straightaway, I see what he’s trying to tell me. “You think I should stop? Quit while I’m ahead?”

He considers the question and something inside me sparks with hope when he shakes his head.

“No. In my continuous search, I found more evidence about last year. If Le Blanche Global had gone under, Dominic planned to utilize the downfall to push your clients to your competitors. They planned to pay him a shit ton of money.”

My muscles go rigid. “That motherfucking bastard.” So much for that shit he told me about not intending for me to get caught in the scandal.

Thank God I’m not gullible enough to believe his shit just because my family has known him for years.

“He wanted you to go down, Hunter. If you had there would have been no coming back for any of you. You can’t repair that kind of damage. If this were me I’d fight him tooth and nail and end him.”

I nod slowly. “He has to fucking pay. I worked too hard for the risk of something like that to happen to me.”

“Then end his ass. I’ll keep looking. You know I’m like a dog with a bone when it comes to things like this.”

“Thank you.”

“Sure thing.”

I sit back and think about this. Whatever Jericho finds sounds like it might be bigger than what I imagined.

I wouldn’t simply destroy Dominic’s campaign and rob him of everything.

It could truly ruin him beyond repair. Just like I wanted.

Sorry, Luna, I know you love your father but when I finish with him there will be nothing left of him.

Chapter 15

Luna

Ihold up my hand and stare at my beautiful engagement ring.

The morning sunlight bounces off the diamond in the middle and sparkles in a million different shades. It even has that exaggerated tinge at the end of the sparkle like you see in the movies.

I'm sitting in my office at work. I came in early to get a head start because I needed the distraction. I've practically finished all my work for the day and it's barely eleven o'clock.

Now I'm left with the memory of last night and all the wicked little things that unearthed themselves. Even if I wanted to forget them, this ring on my finger will be a relentless reminder.

A reminder that Hunter and I are now officially engaged and my heart has changed.

Everything feels so much bigger, overwhelming and real now.

Last night Hunter didn't come up to bed after I left his office. He also left the house before I went downstairs earlier.

Paige told me he had a business meeting with a friend who'd come by. I wondered what kind of business meeting they would've had so early in the morning, but it doesn't really matter.

One of my weaknesses is that I'm too inquisitive for my own good. Like the cat who died of curiosity, I was the one who ventured into unknown territory when I went into Hunter's office.

That’s why I got burned and dug a deeper pit for myself that made things more confusing than they already were.
