I had to pay some money after she flashed her doe eyes at me, and then we walked into a loud, dark place where we bumped into everyone we passed.

I was in the process of trying to get through all the people when I lost Mira.

And I wouldn't look for her, but she has my purse.

If I'm going to get a drink I need to find her. Thankfully, she wore a bright pink shirt that will be a dead giveaway.

I push through people, offering muttered excuses and squeezing myself through until I finally see her shirt. She's dancing with someone already, and he has his arm around her, so I try to get her attention without alerting the guy.

"Mira," I shout over the music, moving with them. "Mira."

"Mira," I say a little louder, tapping her arm.

The man turns around first, and my jaw drops when I see it's Caleb. Caleb, Gabriel's friend and the VP of StoneTech.

"You—"

"You—"

We say at the same time.

"Oh, Harper!" Mira says when she sees me. "I was looking for you, and then I met this gentleman."

Caleb looks at Mira and then at me. "You know her?"

Mira speaks up before I can. "Do I know Harper? She's only like my best friend and the best cyber “thingy” specialist in the entire world. What, do you know her?"

I shake my head subtly to indicate that he shouldn't tell the truth because it quickly occurs to me that if Caleb is here, then chances are Gabriel is too. I don't want Mira to meet Gabriel.

But not even my discretion or Caleb's subtle nod saves me because Gabriel appears at that moment from behind me. I smell his cologne before I hear his voice.

"Caleb," he calls out, "Where did you wander off to, and who is the beautiful woman beside you?"

Beautiful woman?

I spin around, my eyebrows drawn at the pleasantness in his voice—the same pleasantness I have never heard from him.

We lock eyes, his jaw drops, and my lips part slightly.

Where is my neighbor Gabriel and office Gabriel? What has this man wearing a dark blue suit with a crisp white shirt, top buttons undone to reveal a glimpse of his well-chiseled chest, and jacket casually slung over his shoulder, done to him?

Why does he look so effortlessly cool? I mean, he does have a good body and nice facial features on a typical day, but this…phew. I feel a flush spread across my body and a sudden need to fan myself.

"You,” he says.

Then I notice the scowl on his face, and the attraction vanishes.

"Yes, me. Why?" I retort.

"What are you doing here?" His voice is low enough that I doubt anyone else can hear us.

"I'm partying," I say like an idiot as though it should be obvious. "I assume you're doing the same, not going around asking people questions about what they are doing in a club like this."

"Uhm," Mira steps forward, "guys, do you all know each other?"

Even though it is the last thing I want to do, I smile. "Mira, meet my boss, Gabriel Everhart. The man you were dancing with is his VP, Caleb Bennett."

Her eyes widen briefly, and then she smiles, stretching her hand out. "Hi, it's nice to run into you like this. I'm Mira Kendall. Harper's best friend?"
