It's evening…the time when you throw caution to the wind. But it'll mean I'm losing control.

So, I shake my head and offer him a tight-lipped smile. "Mistakes aren't the things you hate. But it doesn't stop them from being mistakes that shouldn't be repeated. We are not having sex again."

Gabriel doesn't argue. He raises his glass, salutes me, and drinks. But my thighs are clamped so tight that the pressure from the friction almost gives me an orgasm right there.

"Your floor."

The elevator doors open for me, and Gabriel does the honor of pointing it out. "You should probably get out, or we might end up in my apartment again. Do you have to make a mistake twice for it to become an intentional action, or is it three times?"

My eyes narrow as I turn to him. "It is not happening."

He gestures to the open doors. "Then go. I'm keeping it open for you."

Huffing, I hold my bag tighter and take one step toward the exit. With only seconds to spare and my mind torn, I turn around and press my lips to Gabriel. It takes a split second, then I'm out of the elevator.

The last thing I see before the doors close is the shocked look on his face and his parted lips.

Leaving him speechless feels like a victory, but the thumping in my chest says otherwise. I might have caught Gabriel unaware, but there's no mistaking that he has begun carving a path to my heart.

And I am helpless to stop him.

Do I really want to?

Chapter 10

Gabriel

"You know," I tell Harper as we ride the elevator down. "When I asked you to go bowling with me, I didn't think you'd agree. I was expecting to be turned down.”

"So, you could tease me about not having a social life or something to that effect?" She cuts in and shakes her head. "I know all of your tricks, Gabriel Everhart. If you think I will allow you to taunt me, you have something else coming."

"Plus," she shrugs, "I like bowling. It is the only recreational activity where you can picture the head of someone you don’t like rolling down the lane and crashing against the pins."

I know her words are empty threats, but I gulp audibly, which makes her laugh.

"I am not talking about you, don't worry."

I exhale.

"Phew."

The doors open, and we get out.

"Does that mean there are people more annoying than me in your life?" I question as we head through the lobby. "I wouldn't have thought so."

Harper flashes me a look with her lips downturned in a so-you-know way. "I don't let people's actions affect me, so you are the most annoying human being I know."

"Ouch."

"You brought it up."

"I thought you were going to soothe my heart by saying I'm not annoying."

She snorts. "In your dreams. Your friend and mine are here, so act properly."

I tug on her hand so she looks at me. "When have I ever misbehaved?"
