“That doesn’t sound half-bad,” she replies cheekily.

“Oh yeah,” I sigh, “I guess it would mean I get to see you more often because I’ll be looking for ways to pay you back.”

Harper tilts her head as she looks at me with a devious sparkle in her eyes. “Pray tell, what ways?”

I turn her palm and write three words on her hand. She sucks in a deep breath, and I chuckle deeply.

“Food for thought,” I add, knowing she’s already thinking about the last time. If we are not going to acknowledge it in the open, I might as well find ways to allude to it.

Harper says nothing, probably because she’s red and flustered, and when the color in her cheeks doesn’t fade away, I tell the driver to roll down the windows. He does, and she sticks her head out, exhaling loudly.

It was my idea to stop at a local pet shop to get some treats for her dog—the big ball of fur that stayed with me for a week.

“I thought you didn’t like Bucky” Harper teases.

“You leave a dog with a man for a week, and he becomes that man’s best friend,” I respond. “And it gives me a reason to come to your apartment.”

She refuses with a shrug. “Nope. I’m not letting you into my apartment.”

“Why? You’ve been in mine, what, three times now? Is there something you’re hiding? A man? A dead body?”

“Yeah,” she nods. “A dead body. So, unless you want to be an accomplice to a murder, I suggest you refrain from looking for ways to get into my apartment.”

I make a nuh-uh sound. “I’ll hire a team of attorneys and we’ll come up with a plausible reason why you couldn’t have murdered the person you have stored in your freezer.”

Harper pins me with a stare.

“How do you know it is in the freezer?” she hisses. “Did someone tell you? No way someone told you.”

“Which means,” she jabs an accusing finger at me, “you must have gotten into my apartment somehow. Do you have a secret camera watching me? Confess, and I won’t report you to the police.”

I am a little scared, but I put on a brave face and scrunch my nose. “The cops? Even if I were watching you, there’s the issue of the body in your freezer. Which one of us do you think will get the lesser time.”

“Hmph.” Harper folds her arms and turns away, leaving me laughing my head off.

The car gets to our destination in no time, and she gets out, hurrying into the building.

“Harper?” I call out. “Harper?”

She doesn’t stop, so I tell the driver to bring the bags to my floor while I hurry after her. Thankfully, the elevator doors open when I arrive, so we enter together. Harper turns to me, rolls her eyes, and makes to leave before the doors close, but I pull her back with my arm sneaking around her waist.

Her body hits my chest, and I punch the close button, pressing the one for her floor.

“All right, fine,” I give in. “I will not ask to see your apartment again.”

“And the body?” She pouts.

The body? “If you need help hiding the evidence of your crime, I’m your man.”

She sulks for a bit more before breaking into a grin seconds before we get to her floor. As soon as the doors open, Harper smartly steps out of my reach and leaps out.

“There’s nobody. I lied,” she chuckles.

I shake my head, thoroughly amused, as she fades out of view. Harper knew I knew she was lying, but we kept up the charade regardless. I wouldn’t have done that for anyone else, not even Caleb.

Everything about her intrigues me and makes me happy—from her quirky side that rarely shows to the serious Harper that comes out at work and of course the sexy, irresistible Harper.

At this point, I don’t need a shaman to tell me that I’m falling in love with Harper Quinn.
