“I’m not saying you shouldn’t. Heck, I am all for having fun, but you don’t hate me anymore. Hate is a strong factor that makes the impossible happen. So, if you drink more than one and you feel dizzy, you come to look for me, okay? I’ll put you up in my room.”

Would it be so bad if I just leaned in and kissed his pretty mouth right in front of everyone?

“Also,” his hand rests on my thighs, inches away from where the hem of my mini skirt has ridden high. “You look so good. If there weren’t a party here, I would do things to you while I’m crouched and you’re seated.”

Okay. The space between my legs heats up.

I’m close to saying fuck it and sliding my tongue past his lips.

I know Gabriel sees the desire on my face because he winks, and his fingers climb higher, teasing the hem of my skirt.

“I have to make sure everyone is behaving themselves. I’ll be right back.”

He leaves me for a while, and I don’t know how much time passes. All I see is the number of women that slide up to him and how he gently lets them down, glancing my way occasionally and asking if I want him to come over.

I’d shake my head and give him a reassuring smile, waving my hand for him to continue with his friends. Even though I’m jealous no one knows I’m the one he’s sleeping with. At some point, there is an argument, and he sees both men out.

I don’t see Gabriel for several minutes, then the door opens, and he walks straight up to me, taking my hand.

“What? Has the party ended?”

There’s a knowing smile playing on his lips. “No, but I have a better idea. Why don’t we go bowling?”

“What about your guests?”

“They’ll be fine. Victoria will handle things.”

“Are you sure?” I look around, and it’s obvious everyone is doing their own thing, so Gabriel simply pulls me out the door.

I say nothing as we head downstairs, and I let him open the door so I can enter his car. He goes over to the other side, settles in, and leans across to kiss me.

“Mm,” he makes a happy sound, “can you tell I’ve wanted to do that all night?”

“All night? You kissed me three hours ago, and I don’t think I spent more than an hour at the party,” I point out. But I have to laugh when his bottom lip juts out. “I mean, I did want to kiss you too. When you did that thing with your hand…”

His hand touches my thigh. “You mean this thing?”

I moan, and he pushes my skirt up until my underwear is exposed. Gabriel’s hand nudges my thighs apart, and his thumb rubs the crotch of my panties, making me heavy with need. I whimper, turning into putty at his touch, and not wanting him to stop.

When he pulls away, I grumble.

“Why?”

He kisses my cheek. “I said I was going to take you bowling.”

“We don’t have to go, you know,” I suggest with a crafty smile. “We can take the elevator back to my apartment and then…you know,” I say.

“You know? What do I know?”

I roll my eyes. “Do I have to spell it out?”

He nods. “Yup.”

“You know that this is me asking you into my apartment after you have been begging to see it,” I say.

Gabriel smiles. “Yup. I know. But I want to take you bowling. I want to be in public with you—just hanging out. If you want to go somewhere else, that’s okay, but I want to do the casual things with you, Harper.”

It sounds suspiciously close to a love confession, but I tell myself not to read too much into it. Gabriel and I, when we are not in the workplace, are neighbors who sometimes sleep with each other and enjoy each other’s company. Nothing more.
