I double my steps and then break into a jog. He does the same, and I hear the footsteps behind me, closing in, almost touching, about to stop me from leaving—

When someone swoops in, knocking him to the ground.

Turning around, I gasp softly when my eyes land on Gabriel.

“Gabriel?”

“Are you okay?” He pulls me into his arms. “Did he do anything to you?”

“No,” I say, even though I’m shaking. “He was following me.”

Gabriel turns to Lance, who is now on his feet, brushing himself off and putting his hands in front of his face.

“Get into your car,” he tells me. “Whatever happens, don’t come out.”

“You can’t do anything to me!” Lance boasts. “Someone is going to take a picture, and it’ll ruin your reputation.”

True, fear grips me. I hold on to Gabriel’s arm, and he turns to me. I shake my head.

“Don’t. It’s not worth it. We can deal with him another way.”

He gently pries my hand off. “I won’t do anything stupid, trust me. Just…go sit in your car.”

I swallow and listen to him, opening my car and entering. Although I’m worried that something might go wrong, like both men getting into a fight and ending up with broken noses, I press my face to the window to watch.

Lance, when he sees Gabriel coming towards him, isn’t backing down. He turns and tries to hurry away, but Gabriel grabs his wrist and twists it around, forcing the man to look at him.

Then he steps forward, and I can barely see them anymore. I sit in the empty car, biting my nails and hoping nothing happens.

After what seems like forever, I see Gabriel walking back. I immediately open the door, stumbling as I try to exit. He breaks my fall and brings me close to his chest, kissing my forehead.

“Are you sure you’re ok? He didn’t touch you at all?”

I tilt my head back to look into his eyes. “No. He was outside the dressing room and—”

I trail off when Gabriel’s eyes narrow angrily, and he reaches into his pocket, whips out his phone, and makes a call.

“Follow him. Make sure no one sees you. Take his camera and bring it to me. You know what to do with him.”

What?

“You’re not going to kill him, are you?” I ask worriedly. “It wasn’t anything I couldn’t have dealt with,” I try changing his mind. “I don’t want blood on your hands.”

Gabriel laughs and gives me an easy smile. “Why would I kill him? I’m only teaching him a lesson, that’s all. And if he was outside your dressing room, he might have taken pictures.”

“And if he did,” his fingers tighten around my arm. “Then I am going to kill him. For now, come with me.”

He takes my hand, and we walk to his car and get into a black Mercedes I don’t recognize. Gabriel sits in the backseat with me, and when the car pulls away, he pulls me into his arms, lowering his head and kissing me on the mouth.

I hold on to him as the adrenaline rush from being stalked fades away, leaving me drained.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t get there faster,” he whispers, touching his forehead to mine.

“How did you know I was in trouble?” I question.

I understand he knew I was at the shopping complex because I told him, but he stopped Lance like he’d been around the whole time.

He sighs.
