Something unrelated to the mood drops in my mind.

“The reporter, Lance, said something about my dad,” I inform him.

“What did he say?”

I bite my lower lip, nervous all of a sudden. What he said was true, and the charges were cleared and dropped even before they got to court, but it’s been years.

My head drops to my hands that are on my legs.

“Harper?” Gabriel’s thumb guides my face back up until our eyes meet again. “You can tell me anything. You know that, right?”

I nod. “Yeah. Um, when I was fifteen, my dad was set up. He had a business partner then who defrauded an investor and planted evidence on my dad.

He was acquitted quickly, and it was like no one knew of it. Lance said something about it. I’m worried he might write a different narrative and smear my dad’s reputation.”

Gabriel takes my hands in his.

“Can you trust me?” He asks.

I nod.

“Good. I will have him dealt with. People like that have things they don’t want to get out. And I’m good at finding what they want to hide. Even if he doesn’t, I have other means.”

“Are you the mafia?” I joke.

He cackles. “Would you like me to be? No, I’m not. But I’ve had to set a few things straight at certain points in my life. I’ll take care of Lance.”

“Thank you,” I respond as the fear in my heart leaves, strengthened by my trust in Gabriel.

“I’ll always have your back, Harper. I promise.”

I know. That’s why I cannot help the fact that I love you.

Chapter 24

Gabriel

"What are you getting her?” I ask as Caleb and I stand in front of the displayed rings, all of them in varying degrees of beauty and prices.

Caleb called me last night, asking for a last-minute favor. It was at eleven pm when I found out that my best friend had set his wedding date for two months from now and hadn’t gotten a ring.

He taps his chin.

“To be honest, I’m not completely sure. I know she doesn’t want something traditional, but I can’t seem to narrow it down to one. Or two,” he looks at me helplessly. “Is it okay if I get her five? Or ten?”

I laugh.

“As a wedding ring?”

“Engagement, too. I want to get something perfect,” he sighs.

Pointing to a ring with a sapphire gemstone, I comment, “This looks good. It’s a good price, too.”

Caleb shakes his head. “Price doesn’t matter when it comes to Mira. I want to give her everything.”

I see.

“Then something from natural materials? You could get a couple of them,” I suggest, pulling him and moving to another section. “These are made of reclaimed whiskey barrel wood, and they incorporate diamonds as centerpieces.
