Gabriel reaches across his desk—his body spread out and grabs my hand. “Where are you going?”

“You need to discuss. I figured I should get on with other things,” I explain.

He shakes his head. “No, no. It’s about the gala. And even if it weren’t, your input is valued.”

“Are you implying that I am a know-it-all?” I say, but I’m smiling proudly.

He nods.

“Yes, ma’am. An invaluable one. Caleb, what do you have to report?”

Caleb gives him a briefing about collaborating with a global distributor for the company’s everyday tech products, a meeting with an investor, and then details about the guest list for the gala.

“I still don’t know why you asked me to handle that,” he finishes.

Gabriel looks at him like it’s supposed to be obvious.

“You’re my VP. If anyone is to handle such a delicate matter like this, it’s you. Harper’s ears are on the ground to make sure everything is ready, including the stellar presentation that will wow the carefully selected guests.”

“I,” he points to himself, “will handle the rest. Including keeping the nosy people at bay.”

“Chelsea?” Caleb asks.

Gabriel’s ex.

The stunning woman I met at that other party. Before meeting her, I had this weird feeling that I might be jealous if we ever crossed paths. When we did, all I could think about was how I couldn’t give her a real piece of my mind because I didn’t mean much to Gabriel then.

We were faking our engagement.

Then he said he was falling in love with me, and now, I feel untouchable.

“She’s quieted down,” he responds. “I doubt she’ll be making any more trouble for us.” He looks at me when he says us, and my heart flutters.

Us.

We’re a real thing, and after tomorrow night, he might be my real fiancé.

“I can’t wait,” I whisper excitedly.

“How many reporters have you invited?” Gabriel asks.

“Three,” Caleb responds. “Two are more likely to cover and write articles in our favor, while the third is neutral.

Gabriel gives him a thumbs up. “You’ve done well. You’ve earned a week off next month. Don’t forget to send us an invite beforehand. Even if it’s a small wedding, we’re your friends”

“Mira told me,” I chime in, just as the door opens again, and my best friend walks in glowing and smiling, like a bride-to-be.”

“What did I tell you?” She asks.

Standing up, I cross the room and throw my arms around my neck, hugging her.

“I’ve missed you,” I declare.

“You were never this affectionate,” she whispers in my ear. “Has Gabriel finally confessed his love for you?”

My head bobs once and she squeals quietly.

“Yes! Okay, we’ll talk about that later, but for now, I have to pick up my fiancé. We need to go dress shopping.”
