The question hits me like a freight train, and my lips part as I struggle to find a suitable response.

“What do you mean?”

“I spoke to Mr. Everhart and relayed everyone’s biggest question of when the wedding would be. He said—”

What did he say?

Gerald adjusts the mic taped to his shirt. “Mr. Everhart might have suggested a secret wedding and offered me an invitation. But, we wouldn’t mind hearing more from you, Miss Quinn.”

The reporter lost me after the secret wedding. If Gabriel told him that we were having a wedding or even implied it, then it means…

I throw my hand over my mouth to stifle my gasp.

What he wanted to tell me was a proposal.

We are getting engaged tonight!?

My stomach swarms with butterflies, and I tap my foot on the floor, biting the corner of my lip in thoughts and excitement.

“Miss Quinn?”

Right. The reporter. I clear my throat to get rid of the excitement.

“If there is a wedding happening, then the invite extends to you.”

I leave him standing there as I turn around and head out of the door I came in. I realize that if I’m going to find Gabriel, then I have to call him, so I reach into my bag and snatch my phone, my eager fingers searching for his contact.

His line rings, but he doesn’t pick up. I try it again, but it’s the same thing.

“Maybe he’s busy,” I mutter. “I just have to find him myself. How hard could it be?”

It turns out to be harder than I thought or expected because after going round and round, there is no trace of Gabriel anywhere. I go to the parking lot, but his car isn’t there either.

We came separately, but why would his car be gone? Did he leave without me? Maybe he had to drop someone off?

Scratching my head and trying to figure out which of the questions is the right one, I head back to the hall and, by a divine stroke of luck, run into Caleb.

“There’s the star of the evening,” he says cheerily. “Everyone is talking about you.”

I blush. “Me? I’m just the cyber person. I’m sure you heard them talking about Gabriel, but I appreciate the flattery.”

He shakes his head.

“Nope. It’s you. Everyone on the team has been talking about how you made sure everything went well, and I might,” he smiles, “have chipped in a thing or two.”

“Thank you. Um, have you seen Gabriel?”

“Oh yeah. Minutes ago? Or an hour? I’m not so sure. He was looking for you.”

Why isn’t he around, then?

I wrack my head, thinking of what Gabriel must have concluded before he left.

“Is anything the matter?” Caleb asks.

I shake my head. “I don’t think so. Gabriel said he wanted to tell me something, and I heard from a reporter that he’d been discussing a wedding. Do you think,” I hesitate for a moment, “it’s a proposal?”

The look on Caleb’s face gives it all away, and I giggle.
