"I didn't sit for a day," Angel grumbled with a roll of her eyes, sinking in her seat a little while nursing a glass of water.

"Is he going to come with us on this next raid?" At least the subject was off my nonexistent love life now.

"Yeah, Nikolai made it clear that if I didn't obey then I wouldn't leave the bed next time, so we're going to have to get used to Benjamin." She continued to grumble with a pouting frown.

"Doesn't sound much like a punishment." I teased with a snicker and smirk.

"Uh huh, wait until it happens to you then you can talk." She retorted with a scoffing chuckle. "Either way, hopefully we'll be more successful with this next one. Bao just got back to me with some surveillance photos of the docks and the shipping manifest, so we'll get them this time, hopefully."

Angel gave out a long, heavy sigh before downing another shot. "It'll be a small crew unlike last time too. We'll get there ahead of the shipment and ambush them. Hopefully, we'll avoid a bullet shower."

"Hey, nothing a quick headshot won't fix." The more violence, the better, in my opinion, but if it had to be clean and easy, then so be it.

There were only so many avenues—nearly none—for me to take out my violent tendencies the way I wanted. Beating up criminals and thugs was the only option, so I often looked forward to any raids Angel sent me on or collection runs. No one cared if a gangbanger got banged up and left for dead.

"I swear, you and beating people up," Angel remarked with a roll of her eyes.

"What can I say? I've got too many issues to work out." Was therapy an option? Yeah, but I'm sure they'd send me to the looney bin faster than I could blink if I went to one. So, I settled for beating people up—ones that deserved it.

Probably another big reason why I had trouble finding someone was because of my violent tendencies. I acted out too much and have too much rage at the world to keep bottled up. I've got way too many issues and trauma.

I also didn't want to open up to people about all my shit and make myself vulnerable, only to have them turn away from me. The fewer people I let in, the more protected I am.

"But either way, wait and ambush? Seems simple enough. I'm guessing you'll shoot us the details once Bao gets them to you and you finalize things?" At least I wouldn't have to worry about Angel's plans of taking down the triad getting in the way of work since it was the typical 9-5 almost unless I chose to pull extra hours.

Nodding her head, Angel smiled at me. "I'll probably handle this one from the van with Bao too, for Nikolai's sake."

Although her husband accepted that Angel wouldn't stop with her plans, he still wasn't happy about her coming home injured. So, Angel's been trying to tone it down with being actively involved in the fighting.

"Don't worry, I got it." Angel's lack of presence on the field itself usually meant I was throttled into the leader role, which I didn't mind one bit.

"I hate rushing things, but I want this shit show to be over with before she gets too much of a footing and I lose mine." Angel's heavy sigh, along with the hanging of her, made her stress clear.

Angel and her little crew—including me—have been trying to shut down the Qing Triad for a while now since the current Dragon Head fell into a coma. His sudden turn in health gave his wife—Angel's stepmother—the opening to take temporary leadership along with Angel. Angel's father was a good man and ran things as cleanly as possible; unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for her stepmother.

Even though it wasn't Angel's responsibility to carry out her father's wishes of shutting down the triad completely, she decided to take it on after seeing the horrible things her stepmother had done. No doubt she would continue to do so if she were to remain in charge and have the triad in her hands.

Personally, I was more than happy to help Angel because I've suffered the consequences of her stepmother's actions and my fucked up family who worked closely with her. I wanted to burn everything to the ground, then burn the ashes to nothing so there would be no chance of the triad resurrecting.

They burned me, now it's my turn to burn them.

Chapter 4

Stepan

Hanna Lee.

From a quick look, she seemed like a simple, brown-eyed girl.

But behind that smile were demons waiting to come out to play from how her eyes stormed.

If I didn't know any better, I probably would have fallen for her cute, confident smile, but I did know better. I've talked and interacted with numerous people like her to know all the little nuances to pick up and how to interpret them correctly. It also helped that I grew up with Lev and still have to put up with him nearly every single day. Even though she wasn't as outwardly as Lev, I could still see it behind her mask when she sat across from me, acting all put together.

Drumming my fingers against my desk, I let my eyes drink in every detail of the open file before me.

Like every other employee and applicant, Hanna's life sat prettily printed on some measly sheets of paper after I dug into her. I always did my due diligence on anyone who applied for the company, so this shouldn't be any different.

But why did it feel different?
