“Someone found a bunch of puppies earlier today and brought them to our animal sanctuary. We’re trying to save them now, but they’re pretty bad off,” said Gaspar. “We think they might have gotten spooked and took the rest of the animals. We also know that there are some adults somewhere in that bunch.” The deputy shook his head.

“Unless they are in cages below the ones we see, those are only puppies.”

“Maybe they kept the breeding-age dogs,” said Ian.

“Could be. But they can’t expect dogs to continue breeding non-stop. They do need rest, right?” asked Nine.

“Recommendation is twelve months,” said Sniff in their ears. “But technically, the female could breed again within six to eight weeks. They might be rotating the females.”

“Whatever they’re doing, we need to stop this,” muttered Ghost. “This just makes me sick.”

“Deputy? Excuse me, deputy,” said a man walking toward them with a young boy. “My son believes he might have seen something.”

“Hello,” smiled the deputy. “Can you tell me what you saw?”

“I was home sick. I got the flu, and Mama said I should stay home. I’m thirteen, so I don’t need anyone to watch me.” The seniors all grinned at the boy, remembering their own being that young.

“Joby, just tell them what you saw, son.”

“Yes, sir. I went outside for a while. Just tired of being in the house, and I heard what sounded like puppies crying. We got a stool in the back yard so you can see over the fence, so I stood on it. The water ain’t deep out there, so you can’t use a boat. There were three men walking out to the middle with them cages. They just stuck them in the water, one-by-one.

“I couldn’t see what was in them. I heard it, but I just didn’t think it was real. I was afraid they were gonna see me, so I went back inside. My Dad came home a few minutes later, but he was on his phone, so I waited to tell him.”

“The one time he doesn’t interrupt my call,” said the man with a sad smile.

“Did you see what the men were driving?” asked Ghost. The boy turned, looking up at him.

“You sure are big, mister.”

“Joby!”

“It’s alright,” laughed Ghost. “I am big, but I have some friends way bigger than me. We’d like to catch those men and punish them. Do you remember seeing their car?”

“Sure. But it wasn’t a car. It was like a tow truck, but without the tow gear. It just had a fence around the back and cages inside. It wasn’t anything special. Just a white truck.”

“That’s actually a lot of help, Joby. Thank you,” said Ghost.

“Yes, sir. One more thing. The three men all wore coveralls like a car mechanic. You know, the blue ones with all the pockets.”

“I know exactly what you mean,” said Ian. “You’ve been really helpful, Joby. Thank you again.”

“Yes, sir. I hope you catch them. That’s just not right.”

The men were silent once again, heading back to Belle Fleur. If a kid knew it was wrong, why the fuck couldn’t adults know that it was wrong?

“I think we have to spread out the search,” said Nine. “Let’s look for any active dog fight rings, cases of rabies in the emergency rooms, anything unusual. We’re going to find these guys, and when we do, we’re going to bury them.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

Katherine was awoken to the smell of coffee, and the heavy breathing of a beast different than the one she enjoyed the night before. Opening her eyes, she smiled at the sweet face of her other protector.

“Good morning, Trig,” she smiled.

The dog licked her face, almost smiling back. He was the sweetest thing she’d ever seen. He hadn’t left the room last night despite Forrest attempting to make him. He was determined to stay by her side all night. Sniff really knew how to choose a dog for someone. He was the right one for her.

Sitting on the side of the bed, she moaned to herself, her body delightfully tender and sore. Touching her lips, she blushed, shaking her head at the amazing lover that Forrest was. She showered off, dressed, and appeared just as he set her coffee on the bar.

“Service. I like this,” she smiled, petting Trig’s head. “He’s such a good boy.”
