“Let us go! Please, let us go,” said Perkins.

“I’ll think about it,” said Ian. “Where did she go?”

“Her house on Lake Catherine. Big, huge place with lots of windows. Now, will you please let us go?”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that. See, son. You never step between a Marine and his fun,” smirked Ian. He nodded at the table of men, then turned. At that exact moment, someone plugged the jukebox back in, and they could only smile, walking away.

“That’s the most fun I’ve had in a while,” said Ghost. “What do you say we handle Dr. Marks ourselves?”

“You know, I believe I’d enjoy that tremendously,” said Gaspar.

“Lake Catherine, here we come.”

Dr. Marks was casually walking from room to room, gathering what she would need to start her research over. She’d worn out her welcome here. Southeast was supposed to provide the legitimate research facilities that she needed, pushing suspicion away from her. Instead, they were curious about her and all the facilities. Time to move on.

Fortunately for her, she’d been left a considerable sum of money by her former business partner. Although he wasn’t really aware of that. The will had been changed just before his untimely demise. Everything was left to her. The labs, the business, all of it. It only added to the fortune she’d already built from other unfortunate partner deaths.

Stopping for a moment, she took a seat to catch her breath. She was so close to finding a cure. Something that would cure her heart disease and earn her a Nobel prize. Every physician in the world would be whispering her name.

If her business partner hadn’t been such an animal lover, perhaps they could have enjoyed this success together. But when he discovered how she was obtaining the puppies, he suddenly had a conscience.

“You’re breeding them here? You can’t do that!” he yelled.

“I can and I have,” she said calmly. “We need more than can be found in the shelters. I have twenty-nine breeding females and seventeen males. I’ve given the males stimulants to make them rut all the time. According to my calculations, we’ll have two hundred puppies a year. More than enough.”

“It’s not right. I don’t want to be a part of this, and I won’t sign off on the labs being a part of it.”

She stood calmly, walking toward him. Neither were young any longer, both with their health issues. But John Pemberly was as round as he was tall, suffering from gout and high blood pressure. All valuable information for her.

Her hand was in her lab coat pocket, gently running her fingers over the syringe. He turned to leave the room, and she took her opportunity, jamming the needle into his neck. Shocked, he turned, staring at her.

“It’s a shame, John. If you’d only taken care of yourself better, you wouldn’t have had the stroke.” She watched as he gasped for air, clutching his chest. Paralyzed, he tried to speak, but to no avail. His face was getting redder and redder.

“Don’t worry, John. I’ll carry on bravely. I’ve been practicing your signature for months now. Sent a change to your will just recently. All of this will continue, in my name.”

Taking her seat, she watched as her partner slowly died. When she was certain there was no way he could survive, she picked up the phone.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“I’ve just discovered my business partner on the floor. I believe he’s had a stroke.”

It was beautifully executed. Exactly the way she wanted. Proud of herself for another well planned, well thought out scenario, now she was ready to start over. With her breath caught, she stood and started packing again.

Time to move on.

CHAPTER THIRTY

“We can be there in thirty minutes,” said Miller. “Twenty if Baptiste wouldn’t drive like a fucking old woman.”

“I’m driving as fast as I can, asshole!” Pork tried not to laugh at the brothers arguing. They were pushing a hundred on the speedometer and would most likely arrive in less than twenty minutes.

“Don’t kill yourselves,” said Gaspar. “We’re going to stake out the house and see if we can get a shot at her.”

“Roger that,” said Baptiste.

“This area doesn’t have a lot of houses,” said Gaspar. “If she’s in a big house, it should be easy to spot. If she’s home, we’ll go in after her.”

“Let’s remember that she has more than a working knowledge of drugs,” said Ian. “We need to watch our backs around her.”
