“How long is this gonna take?”

“Be patient. It’s a gas leak.”

“A gas leak,” smirked Baptiste. “How original.”

“Hey, at least I didn’t just blow it…” The explosion of gas and steel flew into the air, pieces landing on the land and the bayou beyond. Gaspar smirked at his brother, nudging his shoulder.

“Well done, mon frére. Well done.”

“I think I’d like to go home to my wife now,” said Nine.

“Me, too,” said Gaspar. Baptiste smiled at him.

“Yeah, your wife, your alligator, your gorilla…”

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Feeling as though it was the right thing to do, and what they wanted to do, Kegger and Morgan, and Pork and Katherine were married the following weekend. Watching from a distance were several ghosts, a gorilla, and an alligator. No one would have believed it.

The happy couples danced the night away beside their friends, reminiscing, eating, and laughing. Weddings were always the best at Belle Fleur.

“Gaspar? You still mad at me over my animal friends?” asked Irene.

“No, Mama, I’m not mad,” he said, kissing her cheek. “But I do have a question, and I’d like an honest answer.”

“That’s always the best kind,” she said, nodding at him. They took a seat at the edge of the tent, and he held her hand.

“Mama, I love you and Pops no matter what. It doesn’t matter to me where you are, what you are, who you are. But I need to know. How did Katherine meet with a couple that looked exactly like a younger version of you and Pops, and they lost a baby after having more than a dozen healthy ones.”

“Gaspar, now you know we got family all over the place. I’m gonna bet it was one of the cousins somewhere. It couldn’t be your daddy and me. I mean, she said they were in their thirties.” Irene smiled a sweet smile at her son, but he wasn’t buying it. Not for a moment.

“Mama. Are you voodoo?”

“Son, I am Irene Robicheaux. That’s who I am.”

“Mama, you’re avoiding the question. I asked that you be honest with me.”

“Gaspar, I am being honest with you. Sometimes, there are things that can’t be explained, and sometimes, they can be explained. When it’s time.” She stood, kissing his forehead, and turned to walk away.

“Will it be time soon, Mama?” he asked, afraid of the answer.

“No, baby. Not soon.”
