Especially during the long ride from Montana this week.

Stella and I were young, and as much as I wanted her to be my forever, I also wasn’t stupid enough to think that keeping her here when she had dreams of spreading her wings was going to be the start of a perfect relationship.

“We’ll see,” I answered softly, standing a little taller when I spotted her jogging across the field toward us.

She rushed up to the fence, pressing her body against mine and tiptoeing up to meet me eye to eye. “Go home,” she ordered, leaning in and pressing a light kiss to my lips through the diamond-shaped space in the fence. “I’m gonna be another hour or more yet.”

“It’s funny that you think I’d have anywhere else to be but here, watching you risk life and limb.”

“Exactly.” She laughed softly, throwing a glance back over her shoulder. “These boys are shaking like crazy because they know if they don’t catch me, then you’ll probably catch them.”

Bow snorted out a laugh. “Sounds like healthy motivation to me.”

“Sounds more like a broken neck because someone’s hands are too sweaty to catch me,” she countered, throwing Bow a pointed look to quiet his smart mouth before she returned her gaze. Her soft blue eyes held mine for a second, and I was fucking lost. She grinned, pressing a gentle kiss to my lips. “I’ll come by the clubhouse on my way home, okay?”

“One hour,” I murmured back, knowing she’d won but attempting to make it seem like we were just compromising.

“One hour,” she repeated as she walked away, a triumphant smile on her face.

Because we both knew the truth.

She always won.

CHAPTER 7

STELLA

Music played from the speakers in the clubhouse, filling the night air with old rock tunes the younger club members grunted and groaned about but still had everyone coming to life.

Singing.

Dancing.

The kind of energy I had never experienced anywhere else but here.

“I need to pee,” Tate announced, killing the vibe for a moment.

Oliver—who I was struggling to remember to call by his new road name—got up from his seat and nodded toward the clubhouse. “Come on, I’ll take you in.”

She grinned, skipping after him and hooking her arm through his. “Ah, my hero,” she cooed as they disappeared inside. Tate was none the wiser, thinking he’d offered his presence as a kind gesture, but the truth was, we weren’t allowed to wander around the clubhouse without someone with us.

“Is it safe to leave Tate with your brother?” I asked, shaking my head.

It wasn’t that I thought Bow would get up to anything untoward, but more so?—

“I think a better question would be, is it safe to leave Bow with Tate?” Leo scoffed as he tossed another log onto the fire pit.

My thoughts exactly.

I was far more worried about Tate corrupting him than I was the other way around. Bow was sweet and far more take home to meet your mom than Jaxon, but given my parents would turn up their noses at any guy I brought home, the fact that Jaxon wouldn’t meet their standards wasn’t even on my radar.

He met my standards.

“The two of them will be fine,” Jaxon reassured me, wrapping his arm a little tighter around my waist as I sat across his lap. “I’m sure Tate can control herself for a few minutes while Bow helps her find the bathroom.”

I rolled my eyes and pinched his arm, almost making him toss his beer into the fire.

“Ow! Shit, Stell!” I waited with my eyebrows raised as he rubbed at the injury. “Okay, sorry! I’m sure Tate is not going to ravage my brother in the bathroom.”
