“I know you’re unsure of Josiah right now, but what do you think of his dad? Does he seem like he’s the same way as Daddy?” It’s the only way I can think of to word the question so it makes sense to her.
“Well, Daddy would never bring cupcakes to school, or go on field trips. And Josiah talks about him all the time, saying he has the best dad in the entire world.”
“Wow, those are big shoes to fill.”
“Yeah, a bunch of us get mad because we want our dads to be the best in the world.”
Tears crest as the weight of her words hit me. “I’m sorry, honey.”
“It’s okay, I have the best mom in the world, so it probably wouldn’t be fair to anyone else if I had the best dad too.”
“I love you, Tanny. You’re the best in my opinion too.”
She beams and I decide right then we’re getting chicken nuggets from Chick. I’m pretty sure it’s what the best mom in the world would do after such a compliment. “Let’s go see Pop-pop and Gram-mom today. It’s time I tell them about all our changes.”
“Yaay! I hope Gram-mom has brownies!”
Lord help me, the sugar rush is not going to end today.
CHAPTER 7
ZEUS
“Hey,” I greet as I open the door to find Allison and Tanzanite on the other side. “You two look amazing; love the festive clothes.”
“Thanks,” Allison smiles while Tanzanite bounces past me like she’s been here a million times before when, in reality, this is the first. “I figured today was the perfect day to wear our matching heart sweaters.”
“I like it, especially with those leather pants.”
She laughs. “Stretchy pleather, makes this mom bod not look too bad.”
Tugging her inside, I murmur, “You kidding? I’m going to have to fight myself all night to keep my hands off of you.”
“We’re jumping, Dad,” Josiah announces as he runs by, Tanzanite right behind him.
“Have fun!” Allison calls, and I lead her to the kitchen.
“Something to drink, beautiful?”
“I’m going to get a complex if you keep up with the compliments all the time.”
“Good, you should know you’re a stunning woman. You deserve to hear it every day of your life.”
She tilts her head, expression going soft as she gazes at me. “You call me beautiful, but you’re pretty beautiful yourself, Zeus, and I don’t only mean on the outside.”
Leaning in, I press my lips to the top of her head. I can’t help myself, the pull to touch her in some way is too strong for me to resist completely. “Thanks. Let’s see, for drinks I have beer, wine, water, Sprite, and Kool-Aid. What are you drinking?”
“I’ll have a glass of wine with dinner, but how about some Sprite for now?”
“Good choice.” I pour her a glass with a few ice cubes, a straw, and then slice a strawberry for the rim.
“Oh, fancy. Thank you.”
Grinning, I admit, “I made chocolate covered strawberries.”
Her mouth pops open, “You did? For us, for tonight?”
I nod and pull them out of the fridge, setting the small platter beside her. In the next beat, she’s tugging me close and planting her mouth on mine. If I knew chocolate covered strawberries would get this type of response from her, I’d have brought them with me when I rode my bike to find her. Wanting to taste her, I lick the seam of her lips and dive in as soon as they part. I can’t get enough of this woman; I haven’t been able to from our time together at the museum. Sure, when I saw her, I thought she was gorgeous, all sprawled out on the floor looking frazzled. She did this little frustrated huff with a curse, scrambling to collect her belongings. Then later when she bumped into me, I knew I wanted to kiss her. I’d meant to take her to a private corner wanting to see how our banter was and maybe if she was feeling me the same way I was, well kiss her and get her number. Pretty presumptuous of me, but in the recent years it’s taken a lot for a woman to really catch my attention so I knew I needed to take the chance while the opportunity was right. The closed curtain quick fuck was entirely unplanned and probably the hottest thing I’ve ever done. That’s saying a lot as I’ve experienced some wild shit in my time.
