He looked from Jane to the man behind her and it dawned on him that she knew these men. Had he been set up? Was she a plant? “Somebody better fill me in and make it quick.”

“Just give me a minute.” She turned to the conscious guy and he couldn’t make out what she said. The dude bowed. Actually bowed, picked up the unconscious one, and disappeared inside the house they’d parked in front of.

He turned his glare onto the woman that had the answers. “You better start talking.”

She looked up at him and admitted, “Those men are here for me. They are my security team.”

Why was he not surprised at her revelation? “They’re doing a piss poor job of securing you then.”

She looked down at her hands clasped tightly in front of her. “I’m afraid that’s my fault also.”

Her features twisted with guilt.

“Are you with the Luciano family?”

Her confused eyes flashed upward to his. “Who?” she asked, and he believed she had no clue who he was talking about.

That answered one of his questions. If she wasn’t with the family, then what was her agenda? “Never mind. Go on. Tell me who you are and why the hell you need a security team.”

She sighed and shivered in her big puffy coat. “Can we go to my house and talk? It’s freezing out here.”

Agreeing wasn’t because he was concerned. She was cold. “Fine. But I want answers.”

CHAPTER 11

Janel

“A princess?” In a daze, Dozer repeated what she’d just told him.

Janel nodded, afraid he didn’t believe her. To prove her allegation, she pulled up the official family portrait on her phone and held it out to him.

She knew the moment he found her among her brothers and sister. As she was the only woman in the picture with black hair, it wasn’t that difficult. Both her mom and sister had beautiful deep auburn hair. That used to upset Janel, even to the point that when she was five, she believed she must be adopted.

It didn’t matter that her cousins all had the same jet-black locks, she’d wanted hair like her mom and Shayla.

Dozer compared the picture by looking from her phone to her and back again before returning it to her with a sickened look. “You’re a fucking princess. Why the hell are you here? A better question might be who was fool enough to allow you to come?”

She bit her lips to keep from laughing. Calling her father a fool hit her funny bone. Nobody said things like that to her father. Well, maybe just once. “My father wasn’t thrilled, but Mom was on my side so he relented. With conditions. My cousin coming with me was one, and a security team was the other. And he had to approve where I stayed. He’s the one that selected this house.”

Dozer leaned back on the couch, shook his head, and muttered, “A fucking princess.”

The phone in her hand rang. Seeing the name on the screen, she was shocked only that it had taken this long before the call came. “Excuse me, Dozer. I’ve been expecting this.”

He nodded, but she was afraid he was still trying to come to terms with her coming out, so to speak. She sighed and connected the call. “Hello, Daddy.”

“Kitten, I’m not happy with what I’m hearing.”

Of course Haris would have called her father to report.

Inwardly, she sighed. “I know. And I’m sorry.”

“Who is this man that attacked your security?”

Her gaze moved to Dozer, who still looked a shell-shocked. “He’s a friend, Daddy. And my neighbor. He’s been nice enough to drive me around to see the town.”

She could hear her mother in the background feeding him questions. “This is the same man whose house you ran into? Please tell me you aren’t driving anymore.”

She winced. She’d forever be known as the SuMartra who broke a house with her car. “No, sir. My driving days are over. I promise. Yes, it was his house. He’s helping me sell the car. He doesn’t think I should be driving either.” She glanced at Dozer and while she didn’t think he could hear the other end of the conversation, he proved he could when his raised brow said he agreed.
