Janel

“This isn’t the way home,” Janel told Dozer when he turned left instead of right. She’d had a rough day and all she wanted to do was go home, wash the fry smell from her body, and go to bed.

Because of that kiss, she’d been preoccupied for the rest of the shift which in turn made her clumsy. She’d dropped, spilled, or knocked over things until Walter was ready to send her home and run the entire diner by himself.

The closer it had gotten to nine, nerves set in and she’d only gotten worse. How would he react to their kiss? What had the kiss even meant? Why had she reacted so strongly? She had no answers to any of those questions, resulting in her spilling an entire pitcher of sweet tea on a customer. She’d been reliving the kiss and didn’t realize she’d overfilled his glass until it was running down the table and cascading over the edge right into the customer’s lap.

They made another turn she wasn’t familiar with and he still hadn’t explained why they weren’t headed home.

“Dozer. I know this isn’t the way home. Where are we going?”

“To the compound,” he answered brusquely.

“Where?” she asked not at all sure what or where that was.

“The compound is the KOC’s home.”

It kept getting weirder. “What’s the KOC?”

“Our club name is the Kings of Chaos. You do know that I’m in an MC, right?”

“I assumed MC is motorcycle club and, yes, I know that. You told me. I think that’s sweet. Can I go with you on a ride one Sunday?”

Dozer scrubbed his hand down his face and growled “sweet” under his breath, but she heard him. “No, princess. We aren’t a bunch of old men taking a Sunday afternoon ride. We’re… Jesus.” he blew out a sigh of frustration and continued, “you know what? You’ll find out when we get there.”

She was not at all on board with a side trip. “Why are we going? Could we go tomorrow I’m really tired and I can’t wait to take a shower. I never knew food smells could actually soak into the pores of your skin.”

“No. We have to go now.”

That’s when she noticed the tightness around the corners of his eyes. Something was going on. Something that was worrying him. “Why do I get the feeling you aren’t telling me everything.”

“Very perceptive, princess.”

He didn’t answer, which was an annoying habit he had and confirmed her suspicions. Before she could insist he take her home, he pulled into a driveway and stopped before a massive gate that rivaled the palace gates back home.

Dozer nodded to a man at a guard post and the gates opened. Why was he bringing her someplace that needed security? An uneasy feeling began to creep in as he approached a massive brick building that seemed to go on forever. A fortress came to mind. “Are you kidnapping me?”

With a chuckle, he pulled into a parking spot and cut the engine. He turned his head and she could see his brown eyes in the outdoor lighting. “I’m keeping you safe.”

“Safe from what?” she asked.

He gave another frustrated sigh and ran a hand through his hair. “That man you were sharing a meal with isn’t a nice guy.”

She couldn’t believe he’d been this upset with Luc. “This is about Luc?”

He turned until he met her gaze. “His name is Demonte Luciano and he lives up to his name, the Demon. He’s mafia, princess.”

She gasped, her hands going to her mouth as her head shook in denial. “No. You’re wrong.”

“You’re staying here until it’s safe and then, if you’re smart, you’ll get on a plane, fly back to where you came from, and forget all about this place. And your job with Walter has been terminated. His waitresses are coming back tomorrow.”

She was glad Walter’s girls were feeling better, but she’d miss her job.

“Luc wouldn’t hurt me. Take me home—now,” she demanded.

His jaw tensed and his eyes narrowed. “The only place you’re going is inside and, if I have to, I’ll lock you in my room.”

She was aghast at his audacity. “You forget my security follows me. They are all the protection I need.”
