Page 61 of Daring to Surrender

“Mom?” she asked. Her mother had left yesterday to visit her brother Creston and his wife. She wasn’t supposed to return until tomorrow.

“I’m here, sweetie. I had a change of plans,” her mother replied and greeted the doctor when he came in.

Janel had to wonder if the change of plans had been to fly to the States and bring Travis back? She wouldn’t put it past her mom. Which might mean that Travis had been bullied or guilted into coming to make peace with the blind girl. That brought a rise of anger.

“What are you doing here, Travis?” she asked, but before he could answer, the doctor told him to move out of the way.

Doctor Fulsan requested the curtains to be drawn and the lights to be turned off. Travis started to get up, but she wouldn’t release her grip on his hand. Fine, she wasn’t proud of that needy move, and he might not be there of his own free will, but she was weak.

“It’s okay, princess. I’m not going anywhere. I’m just letting the doctor look at you.”

The opposite side of the bed dipped and then Travis took her other hand in his. She shouldn’t be depending on him like she was, but she was frightened. Something had happened in her head and it couldn’t be good. What else was left for her to lose?

The doctor asked her questions about what happened and the severity of the pain, and then asked her to slowly open her eyes. She couldn’t follow that request. She was terrified she would still see nothing but darkness, extinguishing the sliver of hope she’d held on to of one day regaining her eyesight. Or… she might see the face of the man she loved.

She licked her parched lips and swallowed. She had to ask, “Travis, I have to know. Why are you here?”

His palm cupped her cheek. “I’m here because I love you and I was an asshole for thinking we didn’t belong together. Your mom came to visit and made me realize the only place I truly fit is by your side. If learning how to be a fucking prince is what I need to do to get my forever with you, then bring on the tights and prissy fucking jacket.”

Lips gently met hers. “It’s okay, princess. Open your eyes. Whether it’s darkness or light doesn’t matter. You’re stuck with me and we’ll figure out what our future looks like together.”

He took her face in his hands and she felt his breath against her cheeks when he said, “Open your eyes.”

That’s all she’d needed to hear. Her heart stuttered and came to life after too long without him. Her lashes fluttered and slowly rose. At first, she was confused. There was darkness, but not like before. It was more like a badly out-of-focus camera. She saw variations of darkness.

The doctor asked for a lamp to be turned on. She flinched from the sudden brightness and gasped as the shape of Travis’ face came into view.

“Tell me what you see,” Doctor Fulsan prompted.

Tears filled her eyes, making things blurrier. “I see shades of light. Nothing clear or in focus, but it’s more than I’ve seen since the accident.”

“What does this mean, doctor?” Travis asked.

“Without running a few tests, I can’t say for sure. Regaining any sight is a good thing. Will her sight continue to improve or is this as much as she can expect to ever regain? Those things I can’t predict. I’ll give her something for the pain.”

She wanted to refuse, but the ache in her head was fierce. Coolness rubbed against her upper arm and then a pinch followed.

Janel turned her head toward a whimper. A glorious shade of auburn filled her gaze. “Mom?” she called out again, her voice broken and emotion-filled.

“I’m here, dear. I’ve called for your father. He’ll be here soon.”

Janel had no idea who or how many people were in her bedroom. Too many, for sure. “Can I have time alone with Travis? Please.”

Shadows moved toward the door and she heard the click of it closing.

“Is this where I beg you to forgive me and give me another chance?”

She grinned lazily, the pain med taking effect. “Later, definitely, but right now I’d just like for you to hold me while I sleep.”

The bed dipped and he adjusted them until she was lying with her head on his chest and his arms surrounding her. He kissed the top of her head and as she drifted off to sleep, she thought she heard him say three little words she’d never get tired of hearing him say.

They still had a lot to talk about, like how he could have been so stupid to think he could live without her. And she’d make sure he repented for listening to her and staying away. And then she’d allow him to give her lots and lots of orgasms to make up for the two months they missed out on.

The pain in her head lessened, and she slept with a smile on her face.

Much later, the sound of her bedroom door opening woke her. Travis’ body tensed and his arms around her tightened. Then she heard a familiar low growl coming from the bottom of her bed. She grinned, but decided to keep her eyes closed to see how things played out. It should be interesting. A man in his daughter’s bed probably wasn’t what her father had expected to find.

Janel could imagine the stern disapproving look on her father’s face. His arms were probably crossed and his left brow lifted high as he glared daggers at Dozer. Her dad was a marshmallow inside, but could make an imposing figure when needed.
