Whoa, the girl doesn’t pull her punches. “Okay then, I won’t bother you any longer.” I pull the door open, and although the sisters are now blatantly ignoring me, Cassie’s eyes are full of worry.

“Just be careful, Mac. Hopefully if Miller gets a job working there, you’ll be protected.”

I scoff. “Yeah, he wouldn’t spit on me if I were on fire, so I doubt he’ll have my back.”

She tips her head to the side, and I feel like she’s looking deep inside of me. “I wouldn’t be so sure of that. His eyes tracked you at school today. It was like you were a black hole and he was being sucked in. I think you may be surprised.”

“I don’t need a man to watch my back, but I promise I will be careful. Who knows? I might be the key to unraveling their whole operation.”

I can see that she doesn’t believe me, but I’ve been as honest as I can afford to be. Time to cut my losses. I wave goodbye and pull the door closed behind me. Moving toward my room, I walk past the entrance to the attic, and again, I’m yanked into a room—or more correctly, up the stairs first.

“What the fuck?” I hiss at Miller when he finally releases his grip on my arm.

“What did you do? How did you get that job? Anders had a lot of trouble getting a position in there, yet you just walked in and instantly got one?” he demands harshly, and I shrug, feeling quite smug.

“Did you ask him?” I hedge, not sure if he actually knows or not. Anders should still be working, so I doubt he’s had time to debrief his team.

“No.” Miller shoves his hand through his hair, pushing his long bangs back off of his face. “He’s still working, but Dayton sent a message. There’s a team meeting tonight, and I’m supposed to bring you.”

“About fucking time,” I growl. “I had the delightful experience of learning that Maxwell Turner is also a member of Team Bastards today. I don’t want any more surprises.”

He’s momentarily confused by me saying “Team Bastards,” but he quickly recovers. “Fuck, you didn’t blow his cover, did you?” He grabs hold of my arm again and stares down at me.

I yank myself free and shake my head, walking over to his window and pushing it up again to make sure it still slides smoothly.

“Fuck no, I didn’t. I rode his cock like a good little slut and performed for the cameras.” I feel him approach me and whirl so he can’t grab me again, but before I can say anything, his mouth is on mine and his fingers are in my hair, yanking my head to get a better angle. He thrusts his tongue into my mouth and presses his hard body against mine, and I melt into him. Our kiss is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. It’s a tussle for domination, and he quickly overpowers me, owning me like I’ve never been owned before. I’m breathless and hanging onto him for dear life when he finally pulls away.

“Jessica was right, you are a whore,” he sneers before pulling away from me and stalking to the opposite side of the room.

“No, Miller, I’m good at my fucking job. For your information, I would have happily fucked him to keep our covers, but he turned his chair and we faked it. That being said, I will never let something as stupid as someone else judging me prevent me from doing a job. Now how about you jump down off your high fucking horse? I get results, and when I am the one who breaks this ring wide open, I expect you to grovel at my feet in apology.” I clench my hands into fists and refrain from smacking him.

“Not going to happen,” he retorts over his shoulder, not even looking at me.

I guess he’s ashamed of his lack of control. I have nothing to be embarrassed about. Sure, I melted into him like ice cream on hot pavement, but I also spent all afternoon being turned on and teased. Seriously, if he had thrown me on the bed and stripped me naked, I would have praised God. Pity he’s such a judgmental ass, otherwise I might have suggested exactly that. Now I’m just going to have to suffer in silence, but from the look of the hard length in his jeans just before he pushed away, I’m not suffering alone.

“What time are we leaving?” I ask.

“Be up here just before eleven. Anders will pick us up on the way home from the bar.”

“Tell him not to bother. I’ve got us covered,” I tell Miller, heading back toward the stairs.

That finally gets him to turn and look at me in confusion. “Huh? How?”

“Don’t you worry your pretty little head about it. You’ll see later.” I smile as his confusion turns to annoyance, and then I head downstairs, hoping that no one is at the bottom when I exit.

“Kenzie,” Miller growls, but I ignore him, happy to be getting one over on him.

I hope he stews on his annoyance for the next couple of hours. That would make me very happy.

Chapter 20

“You know he’s gay,” Jessica says to me as I enter our room. She’s sitting at the little desk on her side, doing what looks like homework, but she stops as I enter, and I frown at her.

“Who?” I ask, and she rolls her eyes and points at the ceiling.

“Miller, dummy. I heard two sets of feet up there, and it wasn’t hard to put two and two together. Throwing yourself at him just seems desperate, and don’t think we didn’t see how friendly you were with Ryland today.”

Oh shit, okay, that’s not good. I didn’t even consider that she could hear footsteps in this room.
