“Okay. So we’re going to stage an argument between the guys, and Bish also spoke to the coach yesterday about joining. She seemed pleased, but the team will make his life hell unless he looks like he’s cutting ties with us.” Ryland takes over, not even pausing in his fabulous foot rub that is turning me to jelly.

“Shall we get on with exchanging information? It’s getting late, and Miller and Ken—Mac can’t be caught out of the house,” Anders suggests.

“Yeah, and I share a room with Jessica. I don’t doubt she won’t blab if she wakes and finds me gone, especially if she checks your room. She already heard me up there earlier,” I tell Miller.

“How about we get you some sedatives in case you need to leave again? You can slip it into something,” Anders offers, getting up and disappearing the same way that Max had gone before. I’m assuming it’s the kitchen.

“Anders is our medic, so he’ll get you what you need,” Max explains.

Dayton has been pretty quiet this whole time, and I can’t stand the tension that’s radiating off of him. I’m about to tell him to chill the fuck out, but Anders returns with a package.

“There are some needles in there, but I’m not sure if that will work. How heavily does she sleep? Would she be able to sleep through the pinch?” he asks, passing me the package, and I giggle, remembering the bear-like sounds she was emitting.

“Yeah, I’m almost certain she would, but I can cover it up anyway. I’ll just slap her and tell her I saw a spider. Most girls would be relieved, even if they were woken up when you killed it.”

“Smart.” Lathan stops what he’s doing to beam at me. I shoot him a wink, and he blushes slightly before looking back at the screen. Damn it, he’s so stinking cute, I just want to eat him up.

“There are also some pills too. Crack them open and tip the powder into drinks or food,” Anders suggests.

“Yup, I know the deal, thanks,” I assure him and place it on the side table with my phone and keys. “Okay, let’s do this debrief. You tell me what you’ve got, and I’ll tell you what I’ve discovered so far. Sound good?” I suggest now that everyone is sitting again.

“You first,” Miller sneers, obviously wanting to keep the upper hand, but I don’t care. I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve done today.

“Okay, so this is what I’ve discovered.”

Chapter 22

I tell them all about my meeting with the counselor. None of them are surprised to hear the outcome, but they did have a chuckle about my dad putting solicitation in my file.

“Well, it seems to have worked, so it’s not a bad thing,” Anders points out.

“Yes, we think Brock Marshall is a recruiter. He interviews all the new kids that come into the school, but he seems to have two different spiels—one for the regular kids, and then the one he gives foster kids. He also works at a couple of the other schools in the area as well, so he really does have a large target area,” Dayton says, finally speaking up, but he doesn’t look at me.

“And then I overheard a conversation that Mr. Marshall had with none other than Mr. Turner. Seriously, you sounded like the biggest fucking creeper,” I tell Max, and he grimaces.

“You heard that, did you? Yeah, I’ve made it very clear that I like young girls and that I wouldn’t be opposed to having a young girl permanently in my life, but because of my dad’s position, it might not look good. Brock has hinted that he may be able to make something like that happen. I’ve also made it clear that I have particular tastes in the hopes that I might get an invite to the sex club that we think is operating in the area. Brock thinks it’s great to have something on Governor Turner’s son. Apparently my dad was invited back when he went to high school here, but he didn’t like some of their practices and left. He never thought anything else about it until someone brought all the missing foster children to his attention.”

“It’s the Divinity of Morality Club, isn’t it?” I ask, and his eyebrows jump in surprise.

“Yes, it is. How did you figure that out?”

“Anyone who preaches abstinence and is as judgy as that is suspicious as fuck,” I reply, and the whole team laughs.

“Yeah, you’re not wrong, and there is no abstinence, it’s just all hidden under a thin layer of respectability.”

“No, I was propositioned three times today by three different girls. One of them stuck their hand directly down my pants and felt me up.” Bish should look upset about this, but instead he looks proud.

“You didn’t accept any of their advances, did you?” I ask him, and he frowns.

“And why shouldn’t I? They are all legal.” Oh my fuck. I look at Max and Dayton, who are both scowling at Bishop. “It also effectively sells my cover. I’m not suspicious, unlike those three fucks. None of them are showing interest in any of the girls. That’s just not right, and people are starting to talk.”

“Yeah, but we’re also here to work, not to get our rocks off. You can do it during your own time,” Dayton tells Bishop, who shrugs.

“Why not do both at the same time?” I can feel the tension ratchet up in the room again, so I jump in and redirect the conversation. They obviously have a few issues within their team dynamic, and that’s none of my business, but I am for sure going to call my dad and ask him about it at the first opportunity.

“Jessica was telling me today that you are hot and heavy with Stella Standish,” I say to Max.

Ryland snorts and swaps sides so he can rub my other foot. “She wishes.”
