“And that pretty goth girl from yesterday.” He smirks. “The one whose clit piercing you had to finish. She’s the new temporary member of your team.”

“How do you know that?” I ask him, surprised that he knows about Kensington. No one apart from our team and Percy should have that knowledge.

Kevin shrugs. “Percy asked Jeff to ask me to watch out for her.”

My eyes widen in surprise, and Kevin chuckles.

“She may be a ghost operative and a deadly weapon, but she’s still his kid, and she took quite a beating at your hands. She looked terrible yesterday, and it’s been almost a week since it happened. Poor girl looks rough, but she’s putting on a brave face so she can get on with the mission, and that shows just how tough she is, but I saw Charity once after her piece of shit ex Isaac beat her black and blue, and she wasn’t able to move for weeks. The fact that Kenzie is not only up but also working undercover is a testament to her professionalism, but parents worry.”

A lump of guilt settles in my stomach. It’s my fault that she looks that way. I was the one who basically shoved her down a flight of stairs. I’m not sure how I’m ever going to make it up to her. Then yesterday, there was the whole piercing debacle. Fuck my life, I’m an idiot. I was all fumbling fingers. I almost swallowed my tongue when I realized where she had gotten pierced, and I failed to keep it professional when I couldn’t get the ball on. Giving her an orgasm was the highlight of my day. I closed up after she left and went home and rubbed one out to the memory of the sounds she made. I just wished it was wanted and not forced on her through necessity. I could barely look at her last night even though she didn’t seem at all concerned about it. I guess when you’re a honeytrap, you get used to those kinds of things.

Thinking about her using her body to trap her marks makes me angry, so I turn my back on Kevin so he can’t see the swirling thoughts in my eyes.

“Don’t worry, we’ll take care of her,” I assure him gruffly, and he chuckles.

“I think that’s what Percy is counting on.”

Kevin’s customer comes in then, so our chat ends. “Hey, Dayton, I didn’t know you were back in town.” I whirl my chair around and find Timothy Slater. He’s Kevin’s best friend, and he and his wife Rebecca own the Mug Shot Diner.

I get up and shake hands with him. I really like him and his wife, and they have provided me with many a home-cooked meal whenever I’ve been in Summerville working for Kevin.

“Tim, good to see you. Yeah, with Max moving back to work at the high school, I thought I’d tag along and see if I could pick up some work.”

“You guys looking to settle down and put down some roots? It’s about time you started thinking about your future and not drifting from place to place.” Timothy is not in the know like Kevin. He just thinks we’re flighty young adults trying to avoid any responsibilities. He’s not mean about it, he just thinks we should do more with our lives. “I was proud of Max when Jeff told me he would be working at the school and seeing Ryland through his final year. I can’t say I was surprised when I heard he’d been expelled from his last school. Kind of reminds me of his uncle,” Tim jokes, and Kevin smiles, rolling his eyes playfully.

“I wasn’t expelled,” he counters, and Tim shakes his head.

“No, but you saw the inside of detention more than your own home.”

They get on with putting his stencil on, and I turn back to my own work.

I once asked how no one knew that Ryland was too old for high school. It seems weird that their hometown doesn’t know the real ages of the governor’s sons. Max explained that his dad moved away before they were born, and he wasn’t really friends with anyone back in town except his brother. When his parents passed and left them the house, Jeff bought out Kevin’s share and started spending time here occasionally, but he never brought his sons.

By then, Max had joined MITHOS, and Ryland had every intention of following in his brother’s footsteps. Both boys faded from the public eye when they started attending the school, and Jeff had the MITHOS nerd herd clear all information about them off the internet, and any records were destroyed. The world forgot about the governor’s sons. Even now, they are only well-known here. Once we leave, any record of them will be scrubbed, and they will fade into the memories of the townsfolk like we do at any assignment. They may talk about the governor and his sons occasionally, but Jeff will probably sell the house here, and Kevin is talking about moving his tattoo studio elsewhere. He’s had enough of this small town as well. He said it was time for a change of pace, but that depends on if he can convince Charity to leave with him.

I’m not sure how long I’m lost in my thoughts, but when the bell above the door rings, my back screams in protest as I sit up straight. I must have been drawing longer than I thought to have been so seized up.

“Hello, pretty lady, how is that piercing today?” I hear Kevin ask with a smile in his voice.

I swivel my chair around and come face-to-face with my obsession. Mac is biting her lip and looking between Kevin and Tim.

“Ah, hi. I was wondering if I could talk to someone about a tattoo.” She seems nervous, and Kevin smiles while Tim frowns.

“Shouldn’t you be in school?” he asks, and Kevin’s smile morphs to a scowl.

“Jesus, man, stop trying to chase off my clients. If the lady wants a tattoo, then let her get one. How about my man Dayton here takes you into the piercing room for a consultation? That way the old fuddy-duddy won’t make you nervous.” Kevin is a saint, obviously guessing Mac is here to talk to me.

I get up from my seat and wave my hand at the room.

Mac smiles at Kevin. “Thank you,” she says before hurrying through the store and brushing past me to get into the room. She smells like sex and my best friend’s cologne, and I feel my cock harden as I wonder what she and Max got up to this morning. Tim wasn’t wrong with her needing to be in school. What rattled this experienced agent so much that she blew it off to come here?

She doesn’t take a seat, she just paces back and forth across the room. I wait it out, knowing she will tell me what’s wrong as soon as she calms down.

“This fucking town needs to be burned to the ground, and all the fucked up people in it should be fed to the sharks,” she explodes loudly. Not even twenty seconds later, I hear Kevin switch the radio on in the parlor, the loud music hopefully blocking out the sound of our voices. This time when she whirls around, her skirt lifts up, exposing a rosy red ass with large handprints on it. Ahh, so that’s why she’s not taking a seat.

“Want to talk about it?” I ask, smirking at her, and she growls, seeing where my eyes are, and smacks me on the arm.

“Stop it. Max was cornered by Brock this morning. The people behind the camera were not happy about the lack of visual sex yesterday and demanded that he rectify that if he wanted an invite into the supersecret sex club.” She screws up her nose. “I swear if anyone gives me an excuse to go trigger happy, I will lay waste to the people involved.” She cocks her head to the side and looks me straight in the eye. “Can’t I just kill them all off? That would solve everyone’s problems.”
